Chess movies

hey, i’m watching a chess movie which is a true story : The Knights of South Bronx which features the lovely Kate Vernon as Ted Danson’s wife. oh, and Ted Danson too.

Good stuff.

The only other movie of the same genre is Searching for Bobby Fischer which I also humbly recommend.

Check out this other movie for Ben Kingsley and a much younger Laurence “I’m Morpreus” Fishburne.

Did anybody to a movie version of the musical “Chess?”

Since you brought up Chess.

interesting article. chess is an excellent way a movie writer can say a lot about a character in a short amount of time. ive noticed it in many of my favorite movies.

Rick Blaine is sitting and closely examining a chessboard in Casablanca.

Roy Batty bests Tyrell in a game of chess at the end of Blade Runner.

Chess is referred to several times in Independence day after Goldblum’s characters is seen playing against his father in a park.

Seventh Seal - excellent movie (not for everyone). Ingmar Bergman directing with Max von Sydow.

Wholly Frak. I can’t believe I almost forgot about this one.

Okay, it’s not a movie, but there is a book in which chess, and a chess set are central to the plot. It’s a bit like “Da Vinci Code”, but I liked it much more. The way the plot is put together with medieval, 1700s, and modern history is pretty amazing.

Just search Amazon for “The Eight”.

If you do read it, my advice: you can skip over the stuff about the nuns without missing too many plot points. It was her first book, and some of the writing…well the writing is better than you’ll find in the average Star Wars book, but that is not a recommendation.

[not a Da Vinci copycat either, this book was late 80s/early 90s if I remember correctly]
