Centurion / Centaurian?

Centurion  Centaurian?

The show has been using the new term a lot more, even Baltar called them that. The alt. variant of toaster face found on the quickly abandoned ‘Earth’ planet - was that a Centaurian?

Just a thought…

Jamie

Please forgive me if this is a naive question for those who are more up on these things but is there a difference in the two terms? Is there a significance that I haven’t grasped (between Centurion and Centaurian)? I thought it was just personal preference in pronunciation.

If I have this right, I believe that the first time we heard the pronunciation of Centaurian, was from Ellen on the Basestar. And since her re-awakining we have only heard it a few times. Baltar is the only other character to use it, i believe. I do not think the Actors would be permitted to change a piece of canon pronuciation without approval, so it is deliberate. the next question is Why. and then the next question is ,will we know the difference before next movie or caprica…

My personal theory is that the 13th colony used Centaurian and the other 12 used Centurion… but what does that say about Baltar.

other pieces around baltar is his “head” guide…Like the FF, and the fact that He and Kara are the only two characters to be seen to Pray and have their prayers answered imediately.

First off, welcome to the Forum’s glare. Secondly, that is hardly a naive question as it is has been on many people’s minds. I have no evidence of my viewpoint, but here it is:

I haven’t rewatched the series to prove this, but I don’t believe Anders used the Centaurian pronunciation prior to getting a bullet in his head which leads me to believe that those in the know, (Cavil + Final Five) call them Centaurians and everyone else (Significant 7 + Humans) call them Centurians.

My wee thought would be that prior to the Centurions being inhibited they were a free-thinking race known as “Centaurians.” As part of Cavil’s plan to rule the Cylon(z) he had the inhibitor gadgets installed and went as far as to call them by a different name to eradicate their past as is his pattern.

Could be a stretch…perhaps it is just pronunciation, but at this point I feel that nothing is done lightly or without purpose. The fact that everyone noticed this immediately lends itself to the fact their is significance here as opposed to this being a “You say potato, I say potato” situation.

Maybe with the inhibitor chip they are less like the decorated professional Roman soldiers that the name connotes and more just resemble a half-man/half-horse

Nothing like a good stretch in the morning…

I think this is a matter of actor mis-pronunciation. It sad, I know, especially knowing that scripts usually have a pronunciation guide in them. I think though that Centurion is considered a common word and would not be included in a pronunciation guide which is usually reserved for proper nouns.

I remember in the mini-series, Col. Tigh actually pronounced Felix Gaeta’s name as “Gai-ta” with a long ‘i’ instead of “Gay-ta” with the long ‘a’.

My wife did mention that Centaurians would refer to the closest Star to our own, Alpha Centauri.

Hey now - there’s a plot twist… a plot twist that shouldn’t happen with only 4(?) eps to go!

I still want to know who the frakkin’ heck are the Lords of Kobol?!

Put your money on an earlier cycle’s S7 (or E8) type Cylons - which, given the right circumstances - like the passage of several centuries - would seem like “gods” to humans.

I never hear the “centaur” thing that people are talking about.

I hear them pronouncing centurion, cept actually saying T instead of a tch sound. So more like “centoorian”

Centaurians, the cylons of erf.

I agree, I assumed it was just a mistake that no one caught. Yes, and I remember how Gaeta’s was mangled by Tigh.
I just glad the didn’t get called Centauri, which would really get confusing.

Welcome aboard Jamie

I love Londo, a true Centauri.
