I always thought there was something well, not wrong but not right either after the Best of Both Worlds parts one and two that Will Riker now a Captain, went back to being a Commander and first officer. I always (Even as a kid. I was starting 7th grade when the show aired) got a feeling at the end of the Part two with Picard’s and Shelby’s comments that he had “graduated” if you will. In fact friends of mine and I thought that would have been the best time to start a Star Trek spin off with Riker as the Captain on that show.
I suppose I am wondering if anyone else out there shares this conclusion.
Also I wonder if TNG was being created today some twenty years later and after shows like the New BSG and the Soprano’s, if Riker would have been kicked off the show for realisms sake after he was Field Promoted to Captain.
after BSG, I don’t think even Braga would try to make trek as lame-duck boy scouty as TNG. It would be at least as dark as ds9 and some Enterprise stuff.
I think a 60ish year old bald guy wouldn’t be the new captain… it would be a younger guy and a younger crew. Archer was about as old as the next captain would be at the most! So no… I don’t think they would have a “promoteable” XO in a new show… they would have a T’pol, Trip, or a COL Tigh/Major Kira type ( good xo’s that have a few character flaws that make them life long xo’s.I know ds9 promoted Kira at the end… but they shouldn’t have, there should be a new captain… cuase she has too much baggage!)
I know many people didn’t like Enterprise for it’s “off cannon” approach to things, or some hated the secondary characters , or certain episodes, but you have to admit… they got it pretty right when it comes to “look and feel” of an updated Trek show. And the characters are age appropriate, and astheticaly pleasing.
So change the plot, and the setting… but I bet a new trek show would be pretty close to what enterprise was.
hmmmm - if tng were made today, it may be darker, leaning more toward DS9 than BSG tho, I would think. Not sure if Riker would have been kicked off tho (realsms sake or not). Writers are fickle that way
Captain Riker seems to be holding his own in the Titan books…
Yes I am sure it would be darker… Maybe not BSG dark but certainly darker. I do understand turning down promotions, as I did about a year ago at my job. However once he actually commanded a star ship; and saved Earth on top of that. Shelby was right when he could have his pick of a command. Seems silly he would have stayed on Enterprise after that.
Also, after what Picard went through. I would think it would be more likely they would let Riker keep the Enterprise and make Picard have a “recovery.” This is not out of line as they didn’t want Picard there with the Enterprise E six years later (give or take a year) in First Contact.
