Buying TV

I’m in the market for a new TV and I’ve started price shopping. One question I have is what’s the difference between a LCD TV and a Plasma TV? Looks like plasmas are a bit cheaper for their size (looking in the 37" - 42" range), but I don’t know enough about them to know if LCDs have an advantage that make them worth the additional cost. Any advice would be useful.

I have 2 LCD TVs. I think that with the plasma TVs you pretty much have to be sitting in front of them like some computer flat screen monitors. With my LCD you can be at any angle and still see a good picture.

Edit: Oh and watch the prices…they will be falling now that we’re near Christmas. And they are supposed to stay down afterward…from what I’ve been reading.

I’m in the market too. I have a 4 year old 26" CRT tube HDTV. It needs to be recalibrated. The picture it projects on its screen is too big for the screen (i.e. the edges are cut off). It’s not in zoom or anything. And, it’s internal Closed Captions decoder is dead. Recalibration would cost me $200 where a newer 40" LCD HDTV would cost $500. $500 is coincidently the price I payed for the 26" CRT 4 years ago…

Anyway, I found this link helpful…

Particularly, “Should I choose LCD, LED-LCD or plasma?”

Edit: Black Friday (or that week/weekend) would prolly be the best time for a purchase me thinks.

Well, I’m trying to decide between a 37" LCD for $499 and a 42" Plasma for $446.

My current TV is a 27" CRT, so that doesn’t really play into it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m out of town that weekend (I have Thanksgiving with relatives a couple hours away). Plus, there’s no way in hell I’m going to the town center I’ll be buying it at that weekend even if I were in town.

I actually have a pretty good coupon now, but it’s only good through next Sunday.

LCD TV vs. Plasma
LED TV vs. LCD TV
LED TV vs. Plasma

It’s my understanding they made too many TVs/sold too many to stores without them selling this year so prices are gonna plummet

I’m leaning towards LED-LCD or LCD. My problem is once I decide what TV I want, I have to decide on a new TV stand too. So, a new $500 TV may actually cost me $700-1k to have ppl take down my current entertainment center and set up a new one. ):

So, $200 to recalibrate my current TV may not be a bad idea even with its malfunctioning CC decoder… ):

Nearer to Christmas or nearer to Black Friday?

Yup, that’s what I understood too.

Anytime after Black Friday is when I would start shopping. On Black Friday, those great deals will only be available in very limited quantities per store, say 5 to 10 at the most. So if you’re not one of the first 10 people camped out in front of the store 48 hours before Black Friday…you won’t get one.

Though some online stores will be starting to offer bargins before Thanksgiving…so keep an eye out for that too!

If you want to see what will be offered on Black Friday…check www.black-friday.net they’re starting to show them.

Some retail stores are or will jump the gun on Black Friday deals, so keep an eye out there too.

Thanks for the link!

Yeah, you’re right some of the retailers are offering them early too.

We bought a new LCD TV last year - 32" Vizio. We love it! It’s currently sitting on top of our old, dilapidated Kmart entertainment center. We found what we wanted at the Oak Express 3 hours away. I could put new LCD TV’s in 3 more rooms for the price of the piece we want.

Wallmount it!

Man I think I’m gonna replace my DLP with an LED-LCD. Gotta see what kinda deals I can get

Yeah, but my landlord won’t lemme… ): I wouldn’t even want to imagine that conversation after they’ve discovered a wall mounted TV…

I so know what Splatterson is talking about. It’s ridiculous. If I had 5 years and dexterity, I’d learn and make pieces myself for way less…

If we had an actual workshop instead of having to park the truck on the street to do woodworking, we would be doing the same thing!!

Where’s Sean and his artistry when we need them? (:
