Buffy S8

Okay, I haven’t been on the forums in quite awhile (crazy how much they’ve grown). I figured I’d take the opportunity here with my return to be the first one (seemingly) to admit that I both read and enjoy the Buffy Season Eight comics. Now, before the un-harmonious roar of moans and groans starts up…stop it! Yes, I hear you out there!..I want to try to justify my position.

I’ll be the first to admit that the Buffy franchise isn’t for everyone. First and foremost, you’ve got to be patient to enjoy the series – mostly because it really sucked for about the first 1.5 seasons. After that, you’ve got to have a great capacity for suspension of disbelief. Let’s face it, blonde teen and her Scooby gang hunting the things that go bump in the night tend to send off some realism red flags. Lastly, you’ve GOT to appreciate the twisted and irreverent sense of humor of Joss Whedon.

For those who dig the show, and haven’t read any of the comics, I highly recommend it. Unlike the lame kiddie comics that were released concurrently with the show and ran for the majority of the series, these are absolutely 100% canon. All of the stories are written by Joss and the other original writers, and it is in every sense the official continuation from where the show left off.

Trust me. Even if you aren’t sure about Buffy, this is a comic series to at least check out.

I’m all about Buffy, and though Buffy Season remains high on my list, I still haven’t checked it out. I’m cynical/disillusioned about modern graphic novels and the tendency to collect 4 out of 85 issues into collections, instead of just giving us the whole thing at once. So I’m waiting for the whole thing in one shebang. Eagerly.

I can see why you are waiting dxf, but I am really enjoying the cover art. I am also reading Angel Season 6

Both series are really good, although I’ve always enjoyed Buffy just a tad bit more.

I’m really enjoying Buffy Season 8. I think it’s a good as anything on the show was - it’s just a little different because of the new format.

It’s different, but also the same; that what I think is so cool about it. Obviously, there are going to be differences because it’s in a completely different medium. At the same time, though, you’re having a comic continuation that is written and supervised by the show’s creator and most of the original writers. Admittedly, I’m not a comics aficionado, but I don’t think that’s something that is able to happen very often with Tv/Movie spinoff series’.

It is different, not necessarily better, but they can do things like giant Dawn they could never do on the series. Is anyone else having trouble following the plot of the Angel Season 6 comics?

Yes I am getting bored with Angel S6…it feels like it is going no where fast.

OK. I’m going to have to reread from the beginning to find out what the hell is going on

I guess I hadn’t been to the comic shop in a while because when I swung by today, they had two issues of “Buffy” for me. Squee! I glanced through them at lunch but I haven’t had time to properly read them yet. Although the cover for #21 cracks me up.

I love all the nods to the series continuity, and even the continuity of the Fray spinoff, plus Jo Chen’s illustrations are truly works of art.
