So… just wondering… isn’t a cross supposed to repel vampires in Buffyverse, also? Why is everyone wearing crosses but yet everyone gets attacked all the time?

They never really address it, but in other vampire lore, the cross has to be backed by true faith in order to work.
Crosses and holy water burn vampires, so they fear them.
However, some have overcome their fear. In any case, they’ll still hurt them if they touch them.

The Buffyverse is very non-committal about exactly what powers the effect of holy items. Buffy even mentions it’s not certain in one of the later episodes.
