BSG Re-Watch: The Eye of Jupiter

It’s week thirty-eight of our planned off-season re-watch of the entire “re-imagined” BSG canon, and after a little time off to watch Razor, it’s time to move on to the season three episode “The Eye of Jupiter.” So why not join us here for the GWC online frak party? There’s room for everyone, though you’ll have to bring your own snacks…

Feel free to jump in at any point with your comments on this week’s episode as the re-watch is by definition spoiler free. We’ll be in and out, but we’ll definitely take a look at your comments before we start next week’s podcast.

Note: Some readers/listeners asked us to leave comments open on the frak party blog post as they enjoy commenting more than forums. So if you have the time, keep an eye on the blog post every now and then, too, so we don’t leave 'em out in the cold.

I couldn’t help but think of the weird audio cues that the Chief was experiencing, the ones that guided him to the Temple…a precursor to the “Watchtower” signal the final four got later on, methinks.

I loved the way Starbuck brings her raptor in for a landing…more like a controlled crash…at the base camp…flies it like a viper, of course. What a nut. If you’ve ever had a helicopter land on top of you, you know how annoying it can be ! Everything not tied down (or tied up) flies away, to be picked up later.

The scene between Diana and Adama re nuking the planet…awesome! He doesn’t give her an inch…Take that Xena ! It would have played better if he wasn’t staring up into her nostrils though, geeze she’s tall !!

Baltar…a lost puppy getting kicked around like a soccer ball…realizing he’s become a poker chip in the big picture (for now at least)…and later, leaving Six behind (metaphorically) to join with Diana in the search for the Chos(z)en One.

The looks the two Sharons exchange upon meeting, (icicles)…and the news that sets up a great plotline later, as Boomer tells “our” Sharon about the truth re her child.

A bit of a wedge driven in between Adama and Helo with that news !! Helo repects Adama so much, tough to accept that he lied to him about something so terrible.

The Sam and Lee fight over getting Kara…over three gallons of fake sweat reportedly used on this scene alone !!

I remember sitting forward in my chair when this ep ended, with the nukes sliding out of their bays, totally jazzed for the next week !! Damn I miss that feeling !!

Eww, all that fake sweat is gross. Anders looks like the Jolly Green Giant next to Lee.

It was a good cliffhanger too. I noticed the music is the same as from the ending of Pegasus. I remember being annoyed I had to wait a month to find out what happened.

Did anyone else find it strange, and chilling, seeing Tigh walking point with the rest of the Cylon[s] trailing behind him?

Absolutely. I had the misfortune of once of having my squads tent directly next to the firebase’s LZ. One night a massive group of Blackhawks flew in, and they landed a bit close. The tent flew away while we were all sleeping in it! in the fracking winter!

I don’t think that Adama knew or that Helo even thought that he did, but I agree it put a strain, because I think that Helo wanted Adama to back him up, and he should of.

I think had he not be fracking the president on the planet, that he would have gotten in her face in defense of his two officers. Instead he mildly held Helo back… I thought for sure that Helo was going to at least start choking her…’

You’re right, my bad on that one. Adama didn’t know about the Hera plan at that point…
And you know that Helo would be all over Roslin on Adama’s behalf if their roles were reversed, and you can almost see it in Helo’s eyes, he’s waiting for some backup from Adama, and it’s not coming too strongly…Helo has a very well-developed moral structure, and whether we all agree with it all the time is irrelevant (especially to him, he’s going to make choices on what he believes is right, and isn’t above making those decisions even if they conflict with his military responsibilities). He’ll just think about it more before he acts. I think he’s very dismayed that Adama isn’t as P.O.'ed as he and Sharon are. And yeah, the menace was coming off of Helo in WAVES during that scene !

The Chief mentions that the algae is their breakfast, lunch and dinner until they find a “hot fudge planet.” If any of the cylons ever find such a planet, we can test that whole theory of finding a fat Sharon model, since at least one of them would have to partake in 3 squares a day of fudge!

From the way the Cylon Basestar sounds, I think Hera/Isis hates Boomer and misses Maya… I miss Maya too, she was cute.

Is the Chief finding this temple to Jupiter the first sign that he’s a cylon, on the same order as his hearing the Watchtower music at the end of season 3?

I LOVE Brother Cavil, he seems to be the only one who can out slime Baltar, offering Baltar as part of the negotiations as a pot sweetener was GREAT, especially when you see the look in Baltar’s eyes when he realized what was going on! Cavil also seems to be the only machine that actually thinks like a machine. When he gives his speech about it not mattering in they find Earth in 5 days or 5k yrs, it makes total sense, yet it seems like none of the other models thought about it that way.

Dianna and Baltar are so mean to Caprica, in the scene with the 4 of them (hybrid included) I just wanted to give Caprica a big hug after the two of them blew her off as insignificant compared to the destiny awaiting them in the temple.

That’s such a cold moment, when we find out for sure that the plan to hide Hera with Maya was hidden even from Adama. We always speculated that he didn’t know, but there was always the possibility that he was in on it, but it makes those heart to heart convos Adama had with Athena during the New Caprica timeline a lot more sincere and heartfelt, knowing now for certain that he was just as in the dark about Hera as Athena was.

It’s interesting how much more weight the nukes have when Adama unfurls them and they aren’t on a crappy tripod inside a suitcase!

That scene made me wonder this time around. D’Anna clearly thinks the hybrid is talking about her, and Baltar clearly thinks the hybrid is looking at him and therefore that he is the chosen one and that D’Anna has delusions of grandeur. But is the hybrid really looking at Baltar? Caprica Six appears to walk in right behind Baltar while the hybrid is talking, and the hybrid is so loopy that it’s hard to tell exactly who or what she’s looking at.

Crazy speculation: what if neither D’Anna nor Baltar was the “chosen one” after all, since Baltar didn’t see the Final Five and, though D’Anna did, it killed her? What if the hybrid was actually talking about Caprica Six the whole time, and D’Anna and Baltar frakked things up by not taking her along? I don’t know where to go with this, but it does seem like something didn’t go according to plan in the temple, and it would serve D’Anna and Baltar right for how they treated Caprica.

I respectfully request that we from now on and forever more refer to the hybrid in question as Loopy.

Loopy the Hybrid.
It fits.

So, to recap, we have:

  1. Larry the Cylon Centurion
  2. Grandpa Goo, the hybrid that invented wrinkles
  3. Loopy the Hybrid

Am I missing any other BSG nicknames?

I thought the BSG crew made a good point during the last podcast proposing that the Chosen One was Tyrol (since he found the temple and he is one of the final 5), but having Caprica (who seems to be as important a cylon as Racetrack is to the BSG crew when it comes to being in the right place at the right time) be considered for Chosen One status is interesting too.

Oh, WHY was Brother Cavil on the same boarding party as D’Anna and Baltar?!!? Wasn’t the heavy raider party heading for the planet supposed to only be made up of centurions, D’Anna and Balter? If Cavil was part of the crew on that single ship that made it to the planet, why were ALL the cylons (Cavil included) on the Base Star bridge shocked when they found out about the raiders heading planet side? I know it was as shocking to see him with the two of them as it was for me to see him with the rescue party back on Caprica when Starbuck went back to bring Anders’ group back to Galactica during the second half of that two part episode, back when we first found out he was a cylon.

I think Bob the Heavy Raider needs to be on the list.

I’ll second that. All in favor ?

Motioned Seconded. All in favor? The “ayes” have it. Bob the Heavy Raider is now an official GWC Cylon Partner.
