BSG = RDMverse?

With people posting about Virtuality, a second forum dedicated to Caprica and all of RDM’s future projects in the pipe I would like to know:

Should we rename the Battlestar Galactica forum to RDMverse (or another name of your choosing?) or keep BSG separate from Caprica and separate from other future shows such as Virtuality?

Well it’s a matter of franchising. BSG & Caprica are part of the same universe. but ST New Gen is not.

Buffy & Angel makes sense in the same thread. Buffy, the original movie? maybe not. What about Dollhouse, since Eliza Dushku is in it? That’s a tough one…

It’s like asking if we should lump Felicity & Alias & Cloverfield together?

But what if RDM decides to co-op with JJ Abrams? or Whedon? Then we would get an RDM-Abrams-Whedon paradox!

I can’t help it…your post made me think of this old classic:

Seriously tho, you are asking great questions. I have come to admire the approach the Whedonesque website has this subject: If it is a Joss project or a former actor is doing something we will tell you about here. So Nathan Fillion in Castle falls underneath this as well as Dr. Horrible, Firefly and Buffy. We have adopted the same approach on this forum.

Which leads me to the question here. In my opinion, yes, BSG, Caprica, Carnivale, Swamp Thing, Virtuality, etc would all fall into this forum. What makes them interesting and valuable to us is the writer as much as the content. Plus, if Katee Sachoff is doing a new project, we would share it here.

If we were to make a JJ Abrams forum yes, we would lump Alias, Felicity and Cloverfield. To avoid the paradox we would put a pointer in the JJ Abrams forum that points to the New Star Trek thread.

Make sense?

Considering the sheer bulk of BSG-related stuff, I think it deserves its own area, particularly since the prosperity of future projects is still unknown.

Yeah, there’s still BSG-specific things coming out. When that dies down, we can fold it into something else. Especially considering the origins of this site, we should tread lightly here.

I would suggest at this point maintaining the BSG and Caprica forums as separate, but then making an OtherRDM-verse forum as well. The latter can encompass Carnivale, The Thing, Virtuality, etc. Obviously, Star Trek remains its own forum…

I maybe in the minority here, but I like things Seperate. I think each project should have its own spot. I like the new star trek movie but do not like any other J.J. project (AT ALL) so I for one would consider that movie sullied by a close association with clover field.

AND - BSG is ground breaking Land mark TV. it is a benchmark by which all future SCIFI show will be measured. it is OK to leave as it is.

This seems like a good idea.
I think the BSG/Caprica forums should be kept separate for now.

This sounds like a reasonable approach to me.

I’d keep BSG and Caprica forums the way they are. Personally I’d change the “Other Sci-Fi” forum to a more general TV/Movies forum. At the moment books and comics both have their seperate forums but TV/Movies don’t. That means the Other Sci-Fi forum is pretty much gets many of the TV/Movies and Off topic gets the rest. Of course threads about tv shows and movies that have already got a specific forum such as Star Wars and Star Trek would be uneffected. Virtuality for example would to begin with go into the TV/movies / Other Sci Forum, but it may get be popular enough to get its own dedicated forum eventually.

While we are suggesting new forums, how about a Mass Effect sub forum under games and toys. I predict a surge of interest over the coming months.

This has generally been the approach we have followed. When there are many threads either across the forum or in a certain area we make a new forum for it. Caprica, Dr. Who, Lost, Terminator, all these came about due to user activity. The opposite will also be true over time, if a forum’s activity dies down then after a certain period of time it will be aggregated into another area.

We have shied away from sub-forums except for use in archives. I would imagine Mass Effect will follow the pattern of other new content. There will be basically three threads:

  1. New news/previews (prior to release)
  2. Woah! threads (post release)
  3. Spoilers (post release, post played)

If this pattern changes we can certainly evaluate. We are taking an organic flexible approach, and your feedback is critical to keeping the forum vibrant and current!

How about an RDMverse folder and have the Galactica, Caprica, Virtuality and RDM-Other as sub-folders? This way we have all the RDM goodness in one spot in the forum.

Do we also need a Lucas-verse folder? Or should Howard the Duck be discussed under the Star Wars or Other Scifi forums???

Howard the Duck is deservingg not of its own thread…but of its own forum…nay, its own podcast!

Hear! HEAR!

Howard the Duck deserves its own UNIVERSE. Not a pop-culture, “all things Howard the Duck” kind of universe: an actual, big-bang created UNIVERSE.

And Jar Jar Binks should live in it.

I think it still makes sense to have BSG on its own. When The Plan finally airs, we’ll have discussion going on for a while.

I’m with Pike. Battlestar Galactica birthed this forum (…ew, wait, there’s a gross image), and has many, many threads of discussion on the topic. Lumping it all together in an RDMverse is a bit premature at this point, I think. Once BSG has been off the air for a while, and if Caprica and/or Virtuality pick up steam, it might work. And all love for RDM, but does he have the same iconic/cult status as Joss? Not a criticism, just a sincere pondering.

I agree, BSG should stay separate until after The Plan. Caprica should depend on how long it runs and Virtuality should depend on whether or not it gets a Season 1.

Yes it does, but somewhere far, far away from GWCverse!
