I was looking around Amazon because I was going to do a price check on the “Battlestar Galactica: Role Playing Game” corebook (this is for the RPG, not the board game). As I was looking at the selections, I came across what appeared to be another type of “Battlestar Galactica” comic book series. But guess what, it’s not the typical one. Much like “Star Trek” before it, the RIS “Battlestar Galactica” is going Manga, and is being released by TokyoPop! I didn’t even know it existed. But the title of the comic series, from what I can tell, is called “Battlestar Galactica: Echos of New Caprica”. And one of the authors that is listed for the comic series is Richard Hatch (as we all know as Apollo from the original series and Tom Zarek from the new series). Anyways, the release date is listed for April 14, 2009. I figured I’d post it, give us something to read to kill the time between now and “The Plan” and “Caprica”. Here’s the link to Amazon if anyone is curious about it: http://www.amazon.com/Battlestar-Galactica-Manga-Echoes-Caprica/dp/1427815291/ref=sr_1_47?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1238476396&sr=8-47
I find that drawing of Starbuck rather sexy…
I’ll be sure to pick this up, Looks cool.
Plus I’m going through withdrawn here!!
Hell I’ve been coming up with fanfic ideas for frak’s sake!
I know, Starbuck looks rather hot. Six looks pretty dead-on, as well as Adama and Tigh.
And I know what you mean about the withdrawal and fan fic ideas. I’m pretty much stuck in limbo because I still do not have all the Sims for my machinima comic book fan fiction series, though I’m eager to get started.
sweet more bsg!!!
Resurrecting an old thread, but I picked this up at the bookstore yesterday, breezed through it last night, and thought I’d give my review.
First section has, IMO, the best art and writing. It’s centered around Roslin, though the Resistance plays a big part (and the first panel with them had me chuckling–it’s the Final Five minus Ellen), and about her dealing with the reactions of kids and their parents to the occupation, and clashing with the Cylons over her curriculum. The writing was tight, the pacing was good, the story was compelling and most of the characters were easily recognizable.
Second section was Zarek-centric, and is second-best in terms of writing and story (again, IMO). Also, it was written by Richard Hatch! It deals with the week or so between the rescue from New Caprica and Roslin taking power again, and Zarek’s past playing into how he thinks justice should be done–leading to the tribunals and executions we all saw in “Collaborators”. While its bright spot is it’s characterization of Zarek, it’s also the main weakness. Mr. Hatch’s personal biases are very clear here. Also, I’m not sure if Mr. Hatch has written for comics before, but the way that it was scripted makes me wonder if this was his first attempt, or among the first few. That said, the sequence towards the end with Zarek and an old friend from the Astral Queen was pretty wrenching.
The third section is Starbuck-centric, and my least favorite in terms of art and story. Starbuck, still messed up after playing murderous housewife for Leoben and being tricked into thinking that Kacey was her daughter, tries to deal with both and pretty much fails. I liked the sections with Kacey, even if I didn’t like how they occured. It can be argued that the art is meant to convey Starbuck’s state of mind, but in my opinion it made Lee look like a thumb with hair and a uniform, and Helo looked like he should be ringing towers in a French cathedral.
Why should you read it? Roslin story! Get into Zarek’s head! Laugh at Fat Lee and his bitchiness! Fill the hole left by BSG being over with some untold stories!
Arguments against: One good story, one pretty good story, one mediocre story. Art follows suit. The shame of buying something published by Tokyopop when manga isn’t really your thing (I kid, I kid. I buy and read Fullmetal Alchemist when I remember.)
I say give it a try. Easily a B, B+ from me! (My scale in terms of comics right now is A+ = Sandman and Ex Machina, F = whatever comic it was that included the line, “YOUR [not sure if the anatomical name for girl parts is allowed here] IS HAUNTED.”)
