BSG Listed as a Show to Avoid!

Um…they got to Earth. What the frak is so disappointing about that? We’ve all heard the complaints about the finale on several other forums and blogs and stuff.

I must admit, in the past I’ve been a ranting boy. Those days are behind me because I was able to admit to myself that “They didn’t do what I wanted!” If you read posts from haters they sometimes have the customary “This is what I would’ve done.” Well, then go write up a script and sell it and shut up.

Then you get the haters who have nothing useful to say other than, “It sucked.” They may use elegant language and long-winded explanations but basically it boils down to “It sucked.” Well to those I say, “Nothing is perfect.” Every meal, every experience has a moment of ‘meh’.

The BSG finale wasn’t perfect. please see above…nothing is But it was one helluva finale. They actually resolved stuff. The characters and their arcs got special attention. There were still questions to be answered. This is a good thing because it still allows for specualtion. IMO, as Armando stated, this show stayed true to itself to the very end.

“A beautifully genius show… until the end, which wasn’t just disappointing, it was absurd. So much so that it’s best to avoid this altogether if you want any resolution in this life.”

Absurd? Mindy Monez, to write off a show just cuz you didn’t enjoy the finale. That’s absurd!!

really, Armando? “The Passage”? I don’t know many who’d agree with you–especially when there’s “Black Market” and “The Woman King” to be disappointed in

and really, not even so much “Black Market” which features one of the awesomest and my very favoritest of Bear’s compositions

Well, it’s certainly no “Black Market” (I’ll be revisiting “The Woman King” in the next few weeks, but I remember being one of the few people who LIKED that episode around here), and it has its redemptive features (the last act, for instance). But the middle sags for me. Big time. Kat was never THAT compelling a character for me so her death–and the sudden, episode long focus on her character–seemed rather inconsequential to me. I had wondered if this would change over the course of a series-wide rewatch, but, having rewatched “The Passage” last night, I can say that it hasn’t. It’s not a horrible episode, but, for me, it’s the point where the third season, pre-“Maelstrom” sag began.

I liked Woman King as well. But I really liked “The Passage” definitely the best death from Scifi Channel since another radiation death in SG-1

I should qualify and say that I don’t HATE “The Passage” (just like The Dude’s not WRONG), but it’s far from my favorite episode.

Then again, there are few season 3 episodes that would make my top episodes list.

I’m so glad to talk about this here; I saw this a few days ago, and while I’ve been on a BSG blackout of late, it was still distressing to see someone advising others to stay away from a show I looove just because the ending wasn’t perfect.

Especially, when that same writer endorsed Buffy, when 2/3 of Buffy’s last season is complete crap. Poor form TWOP. :frowning:

(For the record, the guy who writes the recaps for BSG on Television Without Pity is a big fan of the show, and a funny/brillant writer in his own right. It’s worth checking out.)

I didn’t like the ending for the show either tbh, but it’s absurd to call it absurd. On the other hand, If I was a Sopranos fan, I would have thrown my remote at the TV soon as I realized a fade to black was all I would get. Then again Mindy seems to think 24 is the best show ever made, so I guess that explains a bit. On the bright side, BtVS was a great show.

What was wrong with Black Market? I loved how that one shook out in the end.

I think that the writer would have better served her audience if she would have just suggested the seasons for people to watch. All series have their ups and downs. Everyone could still disagree with her choices, but at least she wouldn’t have dismissed an entire series because of a few episodes. The journey was the most important thing.

I agree. I guess were some of the few BM defenders out there.

Wait that didn’t come out right…

My biggest problem was how it was advertised. They kept saying it was the “redemption of Apollo”. That’s not what the episode was, and the episode didn’t really fit in with the season very well either.

Black Market felt like a "throw against the wall and see what sticks’ episode, but more than anything it was emblematic of the struggle the writers obviously had in trying to figure out what to do with Apollo.

And I didn’t get “The Passage” either, Armando. It was weird watching an entire episode dedicated to Kat, who was never portrayed as a sympathetic character or a very good leader, and suddenly we’re supposed to appreciate her sacrifice as if she were Gaeta or some other Somewhat Important Character?

I’ll be interested in watching the ep again now that I’ve seen it all. As I am with the whole series, once I get my mitts on 4.0, 4.5, and The Plan.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the guy from TWOP the one who blasted Blood on the Scales but loved Deadlock? Might not have been Blood on the Scales but another late S4 ep that most people really liked.

TWOP senior editor Angel Cohn wrote the widely redistributed Battlestar Galactica: Unanswered Questions last March after the finale.

Associate editor Mindy Monez wrote this recent one.

In their editorial opinion the finale invalidated the series and truthfully, that’s a widely held opinion so they’re not really sticking their digital journalistic necks out. From time to time, one or the other will plunge their daggers in and twist. That agenda gets lost when they sell content to Yahoo.

But yeah, I also think Jacob’s recaps are better representative of TWOP’s writing about Battlestar. Sometimes leaving the feature writing to the feature writers is better than op-ed pieces sold as articles.

Sometime during season four, iTunes asked Ron Moore to pick the best of Battlestar for one of their feature pages. He ended his personal best of list with Exodus, Part 2. I think that’s an excellent recommendation to those who haven’t seen the series before. If they want to forge on ahead they know what they’re doing by then. Much more helpful than suggesting people not watch the series at all because of Daybreak.

Speaking of Mindy, she LOVES Fox’s new musical series Glee. It was well documented that Fox narrowed down two of their final fall season pick up choices to Glee and Virtuality. Fox chose Glee over Virtuality to go to series.

This is a travesty! The last episodes were awesome and made perfect sense.

Clearly the author of said article does not appreciate the finer-tuned aspects of science fiction. S/he is a…gulp…NORMAL person

I wouldn’t categorize her as NORMAL, not that I believe in any such state. Instead I would say she is imperceptive and inattentive. Besides, she never explains what she means by absurd, therefore assuming everyone would think so. That’s foolish. It was no less absurd than say any LOST episode yet she mentions that as a show to watch.

You know, I’m almost done with my own, one-man re-watch here (doing “Blood on the Scales” tonight). I am nothing but impressed at how well together this show hung for as long as it did. It really DOES feel like a 90 hour movie, even with episodes like Black Market, The Woman King (which, I’ve gotta say, I still like), Dirty Hands, Tigh me Up Tigh me Down and other “stand alone” episodes in there sometimes slowing the pace up or mucking things up just slightly (like, what the frak happened to Bull Dog? Such a shame to drop that character, I think). I don’t think I’ll change my mind come the finale in a few days, but who knows?

No, I don’t think the author “gets” it.

Please see here.

She obviously is ignorant and puts into questioning all reporting for that site.

I was really expecting him to pop up in the finale as a viper pilot but he didn’t =/ sad

Man, I’m a bad GWCer, in that I just saw this reply. Sorry.

It can sometimes be really hard to sift through Jacob’s writing, but yeah, I think he did like Deadlock, and really disliked Someone to Watch Over Me (he seemed good with BOTS).

Mainly, he seems to like the eps where things are a bit more ambiguous than just hammer the point; I loved both eps, so it’s hard for me to really judge. I see hit points about STWOM, but I didn’t really agree with him.

Look at me, talking about him like we’re buddies.
