Book Club September/October 2009 Selection Discussion

Hello all!

It’s August 1, and with that comes discussion of the next possible GWC book club selection! If something new has caught your eye, or you want to bump something that was mentioned ages ago, go ahead and do so. I’ll post a poll with the top 20 options on August 15. You have until then to make suggestions.

Please make sure that any text that you want to nominate has ITS OWN THREAD. Suggestions made only in this thread will not be included in the August 15 poll.

Anathem would be such a great choice. It’s a thick and very dense book, yes, but it’s got everything we’d ever want: Action, philosophy, and a good dose of interesting sci-fi and futurism. I think we could have some intriguing discussions on the topics it raises.

Currently reading Buyout, interesting at least for the premise its centered around.

If a book has just been jumping to be nominated (or bumped), don’t forget that I’ll be putting the next book club poll up on AUGUST 15 (that’s this coming Saturday). Suggest away!

Nominate Robert Heinlen’s seminal work that was the inspiration for the marines and their tech in Aliens.

Stands up very well after 50 years - and in old school sci-fi fashion will have you examining your own views. I’ve seen multiple interpretations of the story, but once you read it you’ll see Aliens, Halo, and most futuristic visions of infantry in a new light - and it will make the 1997 movie seem even worse than it was (even though they had some cool effects).

It will also be an easy find in most libraries - and is still in print if you have the gotta own it bug.
