Book Club Reboot: July/August 2009

Once upon a time, there was a group of GWCers who would select a book (usually a traditional novel, but sometimes short stories or graphic novels, too!) and all agree to read it over a specified period of time. The book was selected in various ways, though generally it was through multiple-choice public voting. Many classics of science fiction were read, and even some newer pieces, as well. It was called the GWC Book Club.

Sadly, the book club has fallen by the wayside since the end of BSG (I do not ascribe a causal relationship to the two events, however). But, we shall resuscitate it!

If you excuse my previous florid prose, here is what I would like to do:

For this month, I would like to start a 'lobbying" period as of now, through June 21. This entails posting to older threads about books you would like to see as an option for Book Club voting, or creating new threads for books that do not yet have a thread. On June 21, I will take the top 15-20 (depending on the amount of activity generated) books and create a poll in which all interested may vote for their preferred options for the July-August book club selection. Voting will run through July 1, when I will announce the winner and create a (NOT spoiler-free) discussion thread for the book.

For a list of previous titles discussed in the book club, see this thread.

For a mechanics of how this will work AFTER this month (since we’re starting a bit later than normal), see Chuck’s thread here.

As always, if you have any comments, suggestions, or questions, feel free to post to this thread or PM me.

Happy reading!

Don’t forget that I’ll be posting the poll on Sunday (June 21). If there’s a book you’d like to be in the poll that hasn’t been mentioned in the past week, you have until then to mention it!

Thank you Casilda for taking this on. Looking forward to it.

Thanks, NBTR!

Don’t forget - everyone has until Sunday (I’m in the Eastern Time zone… which I believe has been called God’s True Time Zone ;)) to submit suggestions!!

I hereby nominate The Golden Compass (or The Northern Lights in the UK) by Phillip Pullman. I think Apollymy said she really likes it as well.

I bumped Old Man’s War by John Scalzi thread as means to nominate but I’ll post here too

Casilda, do you have a preference?

I will nominate, “The Road”, especially important as the movie is about to be released.

The books mentioned here, and the threads that have been bumped since the reboot campaign began, will be part of the poll to choose our selection.

And yes, I have my preferences, but I don’t want to unduly influence anything.

I meant preference as to where the nominations go. I guess not.

Trust me…it happens. No worries tho…you run the show however you see fit, I for one am simply glad to see the show back

I’ll second “Old Man’s War”.

Ah, well ideally people would post to threads on the books, but if they wanted to do it here this time, I’ll take all the nominations I can get. I’ll post the poll soon!

All too easy /Vader IYKWIM

:o

Don’t forget to vote for your book club choice!
