Blackhawk down

I think that we should have a DTA podcast about Blackhawk down. I know it is not sci-fi at all, but neither was wargames.

Wargames most definitely is sci-fi. As Sean so carefully pointed out in the DTA 'cast, Wargames includes an intelligent computer. Ergo, sci-fi.

Fantastic movie, but not at all sci-fi. As Chuck rightly notes, sentient supercomputers are (as far as I know) still sci-fi.

you people are making me feel bad. it has been a while since I have listened to that podcast. Hey who said it had to be sci-fi. i know what you are all going to say. But please just watch it.

Definately one worth watching. And get the book, while you’re at it. There’s a lot that was ‘compressed’ for the movie.

please, can we watch it.

I should read the book. But can we please do a DTA

Mactopia,

I am going to try to be diplomatic here but aren’t you a bit young to be watching a movie like “Blackhawk down?” believe me it is realistic enough to give me flashbacks. But then again if you were going to watch a military genre movie, I would recommend something that is actually realistic like Blackhawk Down and We were Soldiers as opposed to craaaap like Platoon, apocalypse now, and Redacted.
You would not believe how often Blackhawk down is quoted in the military. I have heard the words of that one delta force operator, in the movie, enough times that I am about to punch the next person who quotes him…..”You know what I think. Doesn’t matter what I think. Once that first bullet goes over your head…….

Ridley Scott is the man. Alien, Blade Runner, and now Black Hawk Down.

I barely remember the news story but if I recall the army and riddley Scott went head to head about the content of movie to point wherethe army withdrew all there equipment and personnel. I think it was about a senior officer hitting one of his soldiers.

But like others I recommend the book maybe for the book club next month.

you’ll have my vote

I think you may have this movie confused with another—BlackHawk Down received tremendous support from the military.

The acting crew went through a training course run by Rangers. The aircrafts and majority of the pilots( a few even had minor acting roles) were from the actual unit that participated in the Mogadishu battle, and the Rangers you see rappelling from the birds are from one of the platoons that actually fought there. Additionally, the weapons and vehicles you see in the movie were provided by the US Army.

you may very well be right its just somewhere off in the back of my mind, i thought it was Blackhawk down, could have be something else though. I can’t see why the military would be unhappy with the movie it showed the army in a truly heroic and realistic light

i’ll go check it out though you got’s me thinkin’ now

I got a copy of the movie for like 15.00 at best buy. I thought I had heard somewhere that the movie got a lot of ccrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaappppppppp.

As long as people are watching that. you/we should watch band of brothers

BHD frackkin’ rawks hard!..

the movie came out around the final year of my enlistment… i remember in fact watching it in 2001 some months before 9/11… before that my job as a SF (security force trooper as you call it in american terms) was an zero-respect job. After 9/11 however, was another story

Watching BHD, seeing how gungho those rangers are, gave me a sense of purpose to doing my job (heheh I can hear Eddie Olmos now). Doing patrols on and off like clockwork. My buddy and I both had the experience of waking up one time, not knowing where we where and even what Year it was. It was my own personal experience of “33” so to speak.

You are thinking of Heartbreak Ridge. It was originally about Army Rangers in Grenada, but the Army and the production company got into it over how to portray a helo crash, and the Army pulled its support. So, the characters switched to the Corps… and some creative license had to ensue, as there were no Marines present at Heartbreak Ridge in Korea… it was the US Army 2nd Infantry Division.

Black Hawk Down is an excellent movie… about as realistic as you can get with a mainstream motion picture. It’s odd… the one scene that really struck me was when the Little Birds opened up with their miniguns, and the hot brass fell on the Rangers beneath the helo. Sort of a BTDT sort of thing, I guess.

Also good advise to read the book. Excellent study of WTH went wrong.

You got an advanced screening then? Pretty sweet

Yeah I’ve got the ubar 3 disk basorrybarb mcgee edition and the training is intense. But it’s also hilarious. Rangers are doing running and general PT craaaaap while the actors going to play Delta are just blowin up doors, shooting guns, rockin out, etc.

Oh and if you haven’t watched BHD with the soldier commentary you’re totally missing out, it’s awesome

And the big guff that BHD got was that it didn’t show the conflict from the Somali side and it was all white guys shooting black barbarians. Total horse craaaaaaap but what can you expect from people who don’t get it?
