I get Sinclair’s decision - it is what’s best for the situation and the station. But that doesn’t make it less heart-wrenching!
Poor kid.

Poor kid.
But I also believe in Franklin’s decision. He should save his patient’s life and be damned for.
Ivanova’s helmet is such a fish bowl.
Love this bit right before they open the kid.
Prayer for his spirit. Woulda been cool if it escaped.
I understand the Doc’s and Sinclairs positions, but not the parent’s. This is one of those questions that is easier to ask when the parents aren’t human.
If a human parent doesn’t want their kid to have a medical procedure to save their life, is that child abuse?
The real pain is the child. He questions his faith now. His parents reject him. His life is tragic at this point. Is he really better off?
The Franklin/Sinclair and parent thing is somewhat jarring with the Ivanova stuff…
uh oh I don’t want to tear up again.
Totally, I thought that the end of the episode would be
the kid abandoned on B5
, but I think that’s a more BSG-ish ending.
I’m surprised Sinclair didn’t smack that smug look off of Franklin’s face.
Things like this are never easy even in real life. This morning, a friend of mine filed a DCF (Department of Children and Families) report on a woman after her 7 year old son told him some disturbing information.
Richard Biggs performance is wonderful as he enters the room.
I wonder what if any legal repercussions could come from this situation (reminds of some Law and Order episodes)
So now will the parents be charged with murder, because the kid was alive when he left medical.
In a way, this proves the Prime Directive wisdom. You really shouldn’t get involved. “Sometimes it works out. Sometimes it doesn’t”
They are still bound by the laws of their people. It was an internal matter as far as the station is concerned. If a Drazi killed a Drazi, they would be subject to the laws of the Drazi. These people and their world would agree on their decision.
Outside of religions that just completely disallow medical intervention, probably the closest human thing that I can think of would be transplanting an organ from a pig into an Orthodox Jew or Muslim. It would be a permanent uncleanness in the body.
With advanced enough technology, consider how we might treat a human mind transferred into a cow or a chicken. That’s really what they believe happened: their child was no better than a food animal. If anything, it was a mockery of their son, an unnatural thing that looked and acted like him, but wasn’t him.
As much as there are some strong and weak episodes of the first season, this is one that could start some great discussions, (among people that are cordial and friendly, otherwise …)
They never really talk about the laws on the station, but you are probably right, the station only gets involved with humans or cross-speicies incidents.
By the beliefs of their world, what they killed had no soul, therefore it couldn’t be murdered.
Good thing that Kirk always followed that wisdom.
I am falling asleep all so good night…
