Audio editors/converters

Hey techies: do any of you have any experience with audio editing software and/or MP3/.wav/OGG converter software? The program I use, “Audacity,” is a bit clunky and I’m having to jump through so many hoops that files are not getting uploaded to my web site. I’ve had one suggestion for a program, but it’s $45 if I want both the converter ($15) and the editing ($30) feature.

Obviously, I don’t need something like Pro Tools here either. Just something simple (and cheap, or, preferrably, free).

Thanks, oh great hive mind.

Which platform? GarageBand is pretty intuitive, if you’re on a Mac.

Sony’s SoundForge is a straight-forward tool for mono/stereo editing and conversions, EQ/envelope adjustments and the like, without all the more robust trappings that you may not need. I stopped updating versions at 7.0, but they may have gone farther – it had all I needed for quick work.

Agreed. We only ever use Audacity here to do conversions to Ogg format. The piece here titled “Ubuntu Ad 1” is an example of such use of Audacity.

AudioSurgeon from TurtleBeach is a very good package that we use for straight recording. We have the LE version but as soon as the budget gets cleared up we’re looking at buying a license to the full version. Running a mixer into your computer to feed AudioSurgeon works quite well as we do that every week producing.

Audacity has never given me any trouble. What, specifically, are you trying to do?
