Anyone interested in reading (1st time or re-read) the entire Harry Potter series?

the question there is, which way’s the right way?

My thought was that there will naturally be discussion of HBP the book within the discussion of HBP the movie - at least, that is always what happens to me after a HP movie comes out. There’s the inevitable, what they left out, how they brought things to the screen etc discussion. If need be, we can have a HBP book thread now and another one in January when we would get to the book, following the one book a month plan. However, I too am in favor of reading them in order (and not skipping books… though if skipping them the first time through gets someone to read the rest of the series, it’s OK so-long as they actually read them all the second time through).

Agreed. Agreed!

I’m not against anyone reading HBP now. However, I don’t feel the necessity to rush to read HBP as a group in the next, oh, 9 days. It would probably be a pretty stringent challenge for me to finish it in that time with my lifestyle what it is at this time. Plus, there would be NO time for discussion prior to the movie coming out. I think reading HBP before the movie comes out should be considered more of an individual thing at this point and, personally, I’d only recommend it as a re-read, not for those new to the Harry Potter universe. (But, then again, whatever gets you immersed in Harry’s world is OK with me.)

I’m always up for a Potter re-read, count me in!

I voted yes because I am reading them anyway.

Any excuse to re-read them again!

I’m listening to the audiobooks while I play eve/do household crap/drive/etc so I’m down. I’m chapter 9 of book 1

Thank you! Count me in…

I won’t be seeing the movie on opening weekend but still don’t have time to rush through HP:HBP before I do. But I’m sure there will be some who are reading it now to refresh their memories before the movie…and anything that gets people to read I’m all for.

Perfect timing on this thread, I decided to do a reread of the series yesterday!

Unfortunately I can find all of the books but the first one at the moment. It’s doubtlessly in a box somewhere in my messy, messy apartment, and it’s not like it’s hard to find in stores if I don’t locate it by the time the discussion starts up.

Like just about everyone, I was thinking of a re-read myself. The pacing sounds good and I’d like to do Talkshoe too.

I think that’s an interesting idea… as an intellectual exercise, but not appropriate for a simple book group like this.

I haven’t read any of the books before, but at Keara’s suggestion I did go to my local library the other day and picked up a really worn and ragged paperback copy of book 1. I’m about halfway done and so far am really surprised at how it pretty much exactly follows the storyline of the movie with just some minor scenes and details added. So yeah, I’m in too.

Yay! I’m so glad you decided to read it!

Interesting. My local library network has several copies of [Harry Potter and the

Philosopher's Stone

](http://library.minlib.net/record=b1872599). Take that, UK crowd!

I totally would have gone for the British version as well, except as you can see from the entry you linked to that my town’s library doesn’t have a copy in at the moment

I’m in! I’ve never read the Potter series so it’ll be fun to discuss it here.

I’m a purist. I would never consider reading this series backwards . . . I just personally cannot bring myself to do it that way. I suppose I’m a bit narrow-minded, particularly when it comes to reading a series.

Heh. It would be easier for me to put my foot behind my head than it would be for me to read a series out of order, but I’m just wired that way. Did you know that there are actually people who read the last chapter of the book first?! I didn’t even believe it when I heard that, but it’s true! I know it’s wrong, but if I knew such a person I’d have to slap them across the face.

As you go through successive books, they sanitize the language less and you get more British English, thankfully. It adds so much more charm to the books, in my opinion, makes them what they SHOULD be, what JKR intended.

Well, I’d have to say I agree. I can’t understand that either. I don’t like book spoilers. I have a hard time understanding how anyone can enjoy a book after reading the ending but to each his own as long as he/she doesn’t spoil it for me, I suppose.

I was actually planning on starting the series today, after I finished catching up with the forum after my long absence. This sounds like more fun.

I’d be into this… I read the first book about 5-6 years ago, but never finished the series… I’ve been planning to read all of em before the final movies come out… this would be a great place to do it.

I’m in for a discussion of the books. I’ve just started to re-read the series today after realizing that my dislike for Half Blood Prince that made me not finish it (and thus not even read Deathly Hallows) was probably a bit too influenced by having started the book just hours before I got the call that my grandma had died. My emotional state at the time negatively influenced my view of the book. I’m actually looking forward to finishing HBP this time and reading all of DH for the first time.
