Antarctica?!?!?!

I havent seen this mentioned on these forums. In the beginning Daybreak Part 1 when there are the shots of the planet, that we are meant to assume is Caprica, something looks a lot like Antarctica can be seen. Took me awhile to realise that but when I did my first reaction was holy frak is Caprica actually Earth? Not sure I still think that but please discuss.

Assuming that IS Caprica’s sun peeking over the planet, and it’s not just really bright there for no reason, then it’s not Antarctica. Unless, of course, it’s just Earth with the rotation frakked up so much that the sun rises in the north…

well the angle is still wrong. but if you notice the light and dark half of the planet goes north to south.

It does look like Antarctica but I don’t think they are going that direction.

I don’t think RDM would put it there if didn’t have significance. As for the orbit being wrong it possible that in what ever time period this is meant to be in that a) the axis of the earth has moved or b) continental drift has moved Antarctica. I dont if either of thoose are actually possible but it’s just an idea.

It’s hard to tell if some of the detail is clouds or land. If that peninsula is the Antarctic Peninsula, the tip of South America should be visible nearby. It’s probably also worth mentioning that if the visible continent is land (not ice) that Antarctica wouldn’t look like that. Depending on how much the land rebounded, it would be islands of various sizes, some about the size of New Zealand. So, I don’t think it is. But I could be wrong.

Maybe they’ll go back and land by the Statue of Liberty sticking up out of a desert.

BTW, anything in a polar orbit will see the parent star rise like that. If Caprica is Earth, they might try an odd view to disguise it. I thought the same thing about Kobol, but I ended up with extra land masses.

EDIT: Oh, for giggles, if you have Google Earth, start it and drag around until Antarctica is in the middle of the screen, peninsula up. Then check “Sun” in the view menu and set the date to May 1, 2009. It’s close, but you should see South America.

The relatively small land mass surounded by an expansive ocean is better for the native aquagoats of Caprica…

I voted “Earth” by the fact Capricans ride around in Lincoln Town Cars and have Hummies.

And just because most photos of Earth are from orbit over the northern hemisphere, we don’t get many photos from the South Pole. And spaceships can travel in a direction other than the same direction as the planets orbit the sun.

Well, like others have said you have to remember that the sun in this picture is at a distant point in the North (all directions are north from the perspective of the South Pole). So it would appear daylight is spreading from North to South or vice versa. Our planet has some serious sh$t to go through to get that to happen!

I don’t know, but thanks for the new desktop wallpaper.

When I first saw this on the tube, I thought it was a cell-phone ad…

After the recent Daniel fiasco, I completely doubt that RDM has problems putting in things with no importance.

I see what you did there.
