A ghost town

Hey everyone,

Here is a topic for us to talk about. The Forum is staring to look like a Ghost Town. I kind of get the feeling that tumble weeds are blowing through the Threads.

It is only fitting for me to point out a similar time that this happened. It all begins with Harry Potter. Up until the last book was released the fans where everywhere. Theories abounded, parties where being planned and conventions where booked. It was a high moment for all those people who faithfully followed the books. Then the day came, book 7 was released and all of the fans got a chance to read how it all ended. Soon after the discussions stopped, the podcasts lost listeners, and the News media just gave up on reporting about it. Much of the fan base just moved on to the next thing and thus the end of the fandom began. Those who liked the ending or hated it alike are just falling away as each week passes thus leaving the threads to the coyotes and tumble weeds.

I see that happening with BSG too. The casual fans have left the building, the discussions have slowed to a trickle, and the fan base is dwindling.

So like the Title says, do you see a Ghost town too?

In some areas, yes. As for the Skiffy forums? Nothing better could happen to that snake pit. As for GWC, I still come to the forums in the morning to 3 pages of new posts. So, we’re alive & kicking!

I have noticed Star Trek Discussions have increased a bit… But I could be wrong. It just might take us all a while to find our post BSG legs. I think the old and loyal listeners will still be here… there was a long stretch that I basically vanished from the forum after being here at the very start of the blog and podcast due to personal reasons.

I guess we just need to have faith.

I think we’re shearing down to a …more manageable size:stuck_out_tongue:

I do hope the GWC community shows support for the BSG fanfics.

Coolbeans1908 has already posted some : http://forum.galacticwatercooler.com/showpost.php?p=162595&postcount=1

Mine is still in… development phase… :o Hopefully I’ll be ready to pull something out of (sorryBarb)… in public!

I simply see discussion spreading out to other forums. Caprica and Star Trek specifically should see noticeable spikes, but we still have The Plan on the 4.0 DVD release to keep this place going, beyond general discussion. I haven’t re-watched the whole series yet and won’t for a while yet, but come Christmas…

I’ve been on a forum near-hiatus for since the finale, and plan to stay that way for the next month or so, but that’s much more because of exams than BSG being done. I’ll be back soon, and I’m glad to see that others are likely to still be here when I do get back for more than the 5-minute peek.

To be honest, this community has grown so far beyond just a BSG fansite. There’s no danger of this forum just going away any time soon, IMO.

Also once Caprica starts, or if there is another show we all cling too and podcast on I think the forum will look more like it once did. Let’s be honest, people may not have left so to speak, they just might not have much to say right now.

Actually, this sort of thing happened during every hiatus. While the series was going on we’d get a lot of casual fans stop by for a few weeks then everything would slow to a trickle before a few more hard core people who’d hit it off with others would start posting a lot in the “off topic” sections. A lot of us here are academics and the like and are staring down either midterms or end of the semester schedules, among other things. Things will pick back up again before too long, particularly as the summer season begins, the DVDs are released and The Plan and Caprica air.

Some of us have post counts to start bringing up if we’re ever going to catch up to Badger up there and his 10,000 plus posts too…

Fear God (IT) and dread nought. All will be well - if for no other reason that Caprica is going to captivate us. Think “religion” played a role in BSG - well, hand on to your hats.

So you said exactly what I was going to say  Which is why I’m quoting it.

I just think with any show this is gonna happen. IMO, there’s no need to moan about it, but instead do what we can to keep the forum alive. Plus, we have Caprica and The Plan. It’s not over yet.

I see that happening with BSG too. The casual fans have left the building, the discussions have slowed to a trickle, and the fan base is dwindling.

All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again. (Can’t believe no one said that yet)

Honestly, I think that once the series is over, the real discussion can begin. 160 podcasts might say differently, but now that the story is over we can analyze it to a level we could not before. Some shows are still analyzed long after the airing is done, as new fans discover it on DVD and other mediums. The same thing has been happening for years with Babylon 5 over at my other favorite forums, B5TV.com.

I don’t know what the Skiffy–sorry, Siphi, forums are like, but there hasn’t been a big drop-off here so far.

I’ve noticed I’ve slowed down, but only because I Twitter so much! It’s faster and more, um, IFYWIM-ish than most posts (except the gutter, and where has that been the last few weeks!)

Even if the Forum does take some post BSG casualties… That doesn’t mean that the rest of us cannot enjoy it!

That is after all the point of fandom. Those who care and believe remain behind to greet those who come next. As long as there are people talking about the show it never ends. Yet in the end the people who travel this way, many times, walk away themselves leaving an empty hole. In order for BSG to continue there has to be people manning the “Watchtowers”.

Exactly what I was thinking… I’ve been doing a lot more lurking than posting on BSG. I feel the same way about BSG as LOTR: I was completely entranced and living in the moment while enjoying it, and it’s something that I’ll want to revisit periodically for the rest of my life, and want to talk about again… but, the cycle naturally ends, and it’s time to move on to other stuff… Dollhouse and Caprica… and BTW mods, I’d be interested in participating in a Fringe forum, if anybody else is interested.
