#6: XBox TV, Cable Management

We ponder the possibility of Microsoft “Appling” the cable TV industry with an upcoming release of a Kinect-powered streaming/on-demand video service. We discuss some of the many options available to keep cables under control in your desk and home theater setup. Chuck rants a bit about HDMI standards. And we hear from a listener about yet another (awesome) special printer use case.

Y’all are podcasting fools. I can’t catch up.

GO! GO! GO!

First, a great cast. Learned more about TV options than I thought possible!

Oh and thank you for playing my call. In answer to Juan’s question, yes I do print my eBay receipts at 17*22 at max resolution on my 3880 lol! In all truth I don’t own another printer, all the mundane stuff I do entirely electronically including invoicing my clients via PDF sent by email. I only have a printer to do photo printing.

Also for Juan here are the links to camera review Chuck was mentioning.

I have Cablevision with an HBO package. Unfortunately they have no desire to do ANY streaming service deals so I don’t get HBO Go despite paying for it. Don’t get ESPN3 despite paying for it. Etc. It’s awful and it’s not fair.

Cable management for me comes down to zip ties, wire clip ins, and proper cable length. You get something that’s just about right and it’ll be elegant as hell, and if you don’t? Well I’ve got a wood desktop and it’s got places to hide coiled up wire lol. For my entertainment center the best thing I’ve done is get a really nice A/V Receiver. I’ve got HDMI running into it from my 360, PS3, and cable box and from it just one HDMI running up to my TV that’s plug in panel that’s visible from the side. Super neat, and any excess cable is underneath the system between the wall and EC and blocked from view by my sub.

Oh also getting the right colored cables helps. A big yellow or blue Cat5 is just an eyesore. Black or grey ftw.

What ever happened to the idea of the stacking tower for A/V equipment. I am probably wrong here (I though Microsoft was doing it) but basically it was a tower set up, and you basically just plugged in your A/V equipment into it, (don’t know if there was supposed to be a special new port or such, and by plug, I mean your equipment sat on the tower). Once connected the equipment was supposed to “automatically” introduce itself to the rest of the equipment, the A/V signals traveled along the tower spine and go to which ever unit it was supposed to go to. I can’t remember the name of this product, and I read it I think over 8 years ago. I though it was a pretty neat concept.
