#288 Cons and Meeting Other Geeks, Part 1

We talk about our first sci-fi/fantasy/comic convention experiences and delve into our conceptions (and misconceptions) about the process of gathering in the name of geek. GWC listener (and active community member) Julie joins us to tell us about losing her con virginity at the biggest fan con of ‘em all, Dragon*Con. And we run down the week in geek, including a serious discussion (no, really) about the upcoming not-trying-to-be-cheesy sci-fi porn flick Horizon (and what defines porn), some drooling (and whining) over the Nike Mag (read: Back to the Future) sneakers, and lots of upcoming TV goodness.

Audra speaking about the plot of the scifi porn without irony or intended double entendre: “a group of soldiers are holed up in the base and that is where it all goes down” #288, 15:43

Noted. And many thanks!

Here is the Shallow Gravy skit I was talking about in the cast.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this on my DVR last week. The commercial lead-ins/outs with the SDCC 2011 pictures and info were hillarious. I especially liked the Monarch/Dr. Girlfriend cosplay.

Yeah, the D.O.A. movie was a pleasant surprise for me. I expected a cheesy martial arts flick with some hot women. I didn’t expect it to be so damn funny. Kevin Nash brings (Bass) it in the scene where he walks in on his daughter (Tina) in bed with another girl (Christie, and yes they really were just sleeping.)

Bass: Tina! It’s showtime!
Tina: Dad! Not now I’m in my underwear.
Christie: Which I hate. Why you can’t just sleep in the nude like me I’ll never know.
Bass: Oh my god.
Tina: No Dad, she’s just another fighter. We’re just sleeping together.
Bass: Yeah I can see that.
Tina: No. I mean we’re not sleeping together. We’re just… sleeping.
Bass: Seems to me like my baby girl’s found a special friend. We’ll settle it tomorrow, sweetie. Nice to meet you miss.
Christie: Oh it’s Christie.
Bass, enthusiastically: Tina’s real name’s Christina!
Tina Armstrong: Dad!

The scene just had me in fits of laughter. Nash just sells it. There’s another scene later that plays off of this one that’s pretty good too.

Oh, and there’s a guy who flexes his arms and it makes the pump shotgun cocking sound. Pure awesome.

I was howling at that point! Loved the interplay between Bass and Tina. And I thought her twang was the cutest thing evah!

Card game with rings.
Thinking of “Legend of the 5 Rings”? I know some people REALLY into that background (also an RPG)
And the company that does it is called Alderac Entertainment Group. Or for short AEG. AEG? Where does that sound familiar from… (no relation at all I think)

At last DOA love. For some reason this movie hit all the right cheesy notes for me. Plus the “visual” is quite interesting. And what to say about the Evil Plot of Eric Roberts, Super Martial Art Sunglasses!!! Spread the DOA loves and… that will be all

I built a bunch of Trek models (badly) when I was younger. I had the Enterprise D, Defiat, DS9 (about 2 feet in diameter), and a Voyager 3 pack (Voyager, Maquis ship, and Kazon ship). The Defiant and Enterprise D models were almost as long as the DS9 model, but not nearly as tall. I think they’re all broken (or lost) now.

Oh, and I just finished listening to the cast. Here’s a line that is particularly apt given the many conversations in this cast. “The boob must be drawn here. This far, no further.”

I will second Sean’s recommendation of Thundercats. This show is amazing, animated or not. It is by far the more sophisticated of the recently redone Voltron Force - Thundercats (2011) pair. Check it out if you get a chance. The Pilot episode is exceptionally good and movie theater worthy. Don’t be fooled just because it is on Cartoon Network, this show has plenty to offer to adults.

I fondly remember watching Thundercats while eating my cereal before school. I’d like to check out the new version. I was burned by this type of nostalgia once before. I refer to it as the horrible Speed Racer debacle.

I will watch Speed Racer just for John Goodman when it’s on. And some of the race scenes seem quite familiar with the Tron Legacy light cycle scenes. But Speed Racer did lack the sophification and adult overtones found in The Matrix series also made by The Wachowski’s and I will not go out of my way ever to watch the Speed Racer movie. I would state that Thundercats (2011) is no where near the Flintstones-Speed Racer-Rocky & Bullwinkle type re-make let downs. Rather, Thundercats takes the original framework of the 1980’s cartoon and builds a fascinating production surrounding it that is by far superior to most regular network TV shows. If you were ever mildly interested in the original Thundercats cartoon you gotta check out the Thundercats 2011 pilot one hour episode. It is well worth your time. I was by no means the biggest Thundercats fan in the 1980s. I perferred Starblazers, Voltron and Robotech. However, Thundercats 2011 made me a believer and I wish Voltron Force would have been able to put a similar effort into that series’ re-imagining.

~Shooter Out

I keep hearing good things about Thundercats. I’m going to have to check it out.

And no hating on Speed Racer! That’s one of the few movies I went back to see while it was still in the theaters.

Topgun and I (both in the 40 something generation) have had this conversation in GWC settings many times, but we both when we were kids built the AMT models of the Kirk Enterprise, Shuttlecraft, Klingon D7, the Romulan Bird of Prey with the huge bird decal on it …all that stuff.

Like most 13/14 year old boys we eventually destroyed them —burning or blowing them up.
Good times.

SciFi Erotica:

This has been around for ages, at least as far back as Betty Page if not further. My first experiance with it was while reading the very controversial Dangerous Visons back in the 70’s, and later when friends in my high school’s Science Fiction Club recommeneded Heavy Metal Magazine to me. Neverwhere by Richard Corben is probably my favorite example of how this form of SciFi can be done well in a graphic novel format, the art is amazing the segment they did in the Heavy Metal Movie does not even begin to do it justice. And while it works quite well in those two formats (literature and graphic novels) it has rarely translated well to either the small or big screen, the Showtime’s Outer Limits series flirted with it a few times and managed to do it with some taste. And HBO’s ‘perversions of science’ series did it in a far less tame manner. Stripperella was a fun series and often had me laughing so hard I teared up. I suppose Drawn Together may fall into this catagory too,

As for the big screen I remember Barbarella being the first big budget attempt, to bring a comic book series of this nature to life. And while very edgy for its time it seems laughable now. Cherry 2000 while not risque does deal with a rather mature topic, Flesh Gordon is perhaps one of my old favorites in this genre. It was very humorous and had exceptional production values for such a film, the sequel somehow did not work quite as well but is still worth mentioning and even worthy of a viewing.

And then there is Japan, the Lemon Creme mangas take this to a whole new level. And there is of course Hentai and Hentai movies. And some even far more disturbing shit that I had wish I had never opened up and looked at, it scarred me for life. Stuff that would even make Garth Ennis lose his lunch.

Beetlejuice:

The movie really did not do it for me, it was humorous and very imaginitive but just not my cup of tea shall we say. But the animated series was another matter… For some reason it really worked well in that format, I ate it up.

The trouble with Boobies

Bones: It is a human characteristic to love little boobies, especially if they’re attractive in some way.
Spock: Doctor, I am well aware of human characteristics. I am frequently inundated by them, but I’ve trained myself to put up with practically anything.
Bones: Spock, I do not know too much about these little boobies yet, but there is one thing that I have discovered.
Spock: What is that, Doctor?
Bones: I like them… better than I like you.

My momma always said, “Life was like a box of Boobs. You never know what you’re gonna get.”

They cut the power.
What do you mean, “They cut the power”? How could they cut the power, man? They’re Boobs!

Death by Boob (bonus points for the movies reference - there are two of them)

I’ll kill you with my Boob.

Ray, when someone asks you if you’re a Boob, you say “YES”!
