#232: Dazed & Confused, FSL 2.0 Awards, Pilgrim

WOO! Thank you everyone for making FSL 2.0 as fun as it has been. I really enjoyed reading everyone’s stories, and I appreciate everyone’s efforts in organizing and making it all possible. Congrats to all the winners!

Maybe it’s because I’ve never been to a proper high school (went to a small grades 7-12 secondary school, and then a much larger boarding school), but high school hazing as seen in movies and tv is a pretty foreign concept in actuality for me. At least the physical stuff a guy in a locker stuff, anyway.

I’m strangely optimistic that aliens will not be malevolent to us, at least not directly so.

I think it’s kind of an ego thing. As humans, of course we would like to think humans are actually a species intelligent and special enough (and living on a planet special enough - but if there are aliens out there, then Earth cannot be all that special) to warrant aliens to even care about us or take the time to destroy us.

And, if aliens were able to keep evolving and advancing without destroying themselves first (like we might be doing with our planet and whatnot) to a point where they are advanced enough to get to us easily, I would imagine they would be quite enlightened and thus transcend our petty human nature. So, I doubt at this point in time we’d pose enough of a threat to their survival to warrant any extermination.

But we are special, we bring aircraft carriers into space and are on the Council within a generation. I’d like to see most Aliens do that!

Takes a small bow

And now I will take whatever credit I can for picking pretty (and ossim) characters so Sean could make ossim cards.

And I also christen myself with the most forgotten player in FSL:2*, big grins Apparently I should win in the upcoming CIA edition.

In other news, I’m hoping that we can stir our butts and get off this planet. Even excepting aliens trying to glass us from orbit, or asteroids, or merely running out of resources, there are dozens of other ways we can take humanity out on Earth. Unfortunately, I don’t see the leaders of this planet really working to reach that goal. And even if they were, it would probably just lead to the new space colonies declaring independence and later war on Earth.

Looking forward to the Breakfast Club next week, and hoping that sometime in the future to 10 Things I Hate About You (Which is a fun high school movie, even if it doesn’t represent the zeitgeist of any particular era).

And if anyone has a cheap reccomendation to connect an I-Pod to a car without any uplink cables or that cassette tape thingy**, I may try to go back to listening to GWC while driving around, otherwise my GWC time seems to be right before I go to sleep and then think to check for a podcast.

*Also the forgotten mentioner of the inverse ninja law in the first challenge.

** I have one, it just ejects without working. Maybe I need a new one.

Also meant to add in response to Audra’s comment about wanting shoes worn in sci-fi films, then you should look no furhter than New Rocks. The New Rock brand of footwear appear astonishingly frequent (and no, I do not have shares in them)

One more thing (in my best Columbo impression):
So, where do we send our twenty-somethings experiences?
I have a few, such as the time I was protesting against a parking ticket in London. Apart from the fact I was at SM Pride Parade, and was dressed in a white PVC nurses dress with matching knee-boots and splattered with (fake) blood. I was arguing with the policeman for over half and hour, and he never blinked once!

I’m sure I heard your name a couple of times :).

I use a short FM transmitter in my car, you set the frequency on the device, then tune your radio to that frequency…Voila…

Have you trioed an FM transmitter? They don’t always work, but it’s worth the try.

I’m thinking about it, but I’m also wondering what the cheapest working alternative is. That may be what I get to, I just don’t know what the cost is yet. I may google it soon.

Fallen are you making sure the wire is out of the way of the mechanics of the tape deck? There should be like a channel on the tape where the wire can fit and stick out without impeding anything

Regarding Milla Jovovich and a singing career. She does have one album out called the Divine Comedy. It is actually a really awesome album. Its been awhile since i have listened to it but as i best remember it its kinda like a mix of Enya and Bjork. My old roommate many years ago picked it up back in 97 or so. We used to listen to it while we were going to sleep to try and give ourselves messed up dreams.

Those are the cheap answers. The FM transmitters being suggested only really work if you live in a very low population density area, otherwise radio stations will provide lots of interference. Your mileage may vary, but they are unreliable at best.

I purchased a new stereo to replace to busted CD player in my car and have fallen in love with Bluetooth audio (with which it came as an afterthought, I didn’t shop for it). It also has an aux-in jack in the front, which is super superior to the cassette option in terms of audio quality.

Might be time to shop for a new deck. Finding something with the aux-in for cheap should be easy.

Here’s the super duper stereo I got for super duper cheap (well, super duper cheap considering all the features):

They have stereos for much less, of course:

You might be able to find something at a local shop with an Aux-in for cheap too! The aux-in (I’ll keep repeating it, it’s worth remembering) is a great feature for low-hassle future-proofed audio. Ten years from now when we’re all listening to archived local copies of the Internet that sit on a storage pebble the size of a grain of rice, there will still be a 1/8" stereo adapter cable for it available SOMEWHERE.

I know where you’re coming from on that. My old one broke (cord tore off at the connection to the iPod). My car stereo has a real problem with the new one. It’s fine for about 20 seconds, then spits it back out. I have one of the FM transmitters but I don’t remember it working too well.

Plus, I figure I’m only a year or two from needing a new car, so I don’t want to put a new stereo in.

For anyone who hasn’t heard it. This is Captain Kirrahe’s ‘Hold the Line’ speech. I still choke up knowing the little guy gave his life for my team.

I nearly shot Mordin when he made fun of him in ME2

Also here’s the thing I was talking about with Paris Hilton and Kim Stewart

I still laugh everytime

I use an FM transmitter for my iPod and I live in a pretty densly populated area. It helps boost the signal strength if you are able to remove the car’s radio antenna. I don’t usually have trouble with it unless I am right on top of one of the radio towers in Phoenix.

Um…Kirrahe doesn’t have to die bro. He’s in fact not dead in my Canon (Cause it’s mine) Shepard.

I know, and in most of my runs he lives now but the character I took to ME2 was my first Shepard and he didn’t make it through with that one.

As a person who has lived in NY all his life I really have no idea how it is in small town HS so its an eye opener.

That’s really sad bro. <3 Captain Kirrahe.

HOLD. THE. LINE

I think the closest Mordin comes to making fun of it is when he says he’d rather get the job done and get home.

Oh, and from what I understand (since it hasn’t happened in either of my playthroughs I’m that far on), if Mordin buys it during some part of the suicide mission, he says “Tell them… I held the line”, so even if he doesn’t always agree with him, he respects/respected Kirrahe.

Don’t even think of nominating Kids for the arc, please. Thanks!

Seriously, however, welcome aboard.
