#228: Stargate Time Travel (2010), FSL 2.0 Round 4

This week: We travel backwards in time with a piece of paper in the Stargate SG-1 episode 2010. We save a fast food giant in Fantasy Sci-Fi League 2.0 round four. And we run down the week in geek, including the world’s first soon-to-be-deployed real Cylon raider, Pixar’s new work on Tron Legacy re-shoots and re-renders, Nathon Fillion’s opinions on flying cars, and who won’t be the Hulk.

I’m only to the Trip Wraith discussion, and trust me, Michael is very not nice.

FidoNet…that brings back memories.

About Sean’s comment about comics in Germany being “bets off”.

I’m in no capacity an expert on that field. But I remember (especially after 1989) a few anarchic comics like Werner “Beinhart”, Kleines Arschloch (adapted shortvideo of it, english version)

Only in recent years, comics got more recognized, besides being only for kids.
But still most comics here are translated versions of America or Japan.
If you wanna learn more about it, the Goethe-Institute has a very comprehensive portal about this topic: http://www.goethe.de/kue/lit/prj/com/enindex.htm

Indeed it does. Thanks for posting that pic, too!

Man, I got sooo excited when I heard my name on the 'cast…until I realized that that wasn’t my entry. :o

Sean, that honorable mention goes to Baconface…but another great show from you guys. And the MPAA rant was gold!

Great show again, love the cast and major thanks for the shout out to my boy. He had an awesome birthday day playing with his presents and going to the park to feed the ducks. Again, thanks for the mention (not once, but twice).

I find it funny that people say that comics are for kids, but they rush to watch Spiderman, Iron Man, X-men,etc. I think the attitude is changing…Plus the term is

Adults - It’s not comics, it’s graphic novels

I listen to the FSL entries and it’s amazing the amount of creativity that people have when it comes to literary entries.

Although its next weeks arc, you should check out Dark Fury, (Which explains the gap between Pitch Black and Cor - a bit like the flight of the orisis (matrix)).

For the record, The 10th Doctor (David Tennant) was my Doctor. I like the 9th okay, and the 11th is really really growing on me. I like him a lot, but 10 was and is my fav. Even though the production value of the show in the first season is quite a bit lower than 2+, it’s worth watching just as an introduction.

The brilliance of building into your show the ability to swap out your lead actor and still fit entirely within the canon of the show is amazing. I would recommend to anyone to sit down and invest some time in Doctor Who. You guys really should watch it (I admit that season 5 gets a little rocky at points, but it finishes beautifully.)

Doctor Who FTW.
If I were Nathan Fillion, I’d say “Doctor Who Double Rainbow All the Way!”

Sean - You CAN appeal it. Kevin Smith appeals stuff all the time and half the time he gets it through a second time without edits!

That’ll teach me to listen to the whole thing before posting xfd

There’s a documentary about the MPAA rating system called “This Film is not Yet Rated” which goes into tremendous depth regarding the process and who is involved. Somewhat ironically I turned it off halfway through because of the content - not something I felt comfortable watching (A lot of nudity and some porn).
The movie does bring up some excellent points. One of the things that stood out was Matt Stone talking about how when they were privately producing their movies they were given a rating and ZERO information about what to change to make it a better rating. When producing the South Park movie, apparently the weight of having Paramount behind them got them all kinds of helpful information on what to do to get a better rating. The rating system is supposed to be about helping people make decisions, but in our country it’s about targeting your audience for the greatest amount of profit.

The MPAA system is a joke. There is one piece of criteria for the system. The people on the panel are asked “How do you think most parents would rate this film”. There are no other criterion for the film, and the only criterion for being on the panel is the painfully ambiguous “has some parental experience”

As a result, I look at the MPAA ratings, but if there’s a question in my mind I usually end up at someplace like kids-in-mind.com, that actually rates the film based on content, occurances, and gives you that information (in a surprisingly non-spoliery way).

Jack Valenti is the Jerk that brought this all about.

(Just now hearing Sean talk about this on the cast.)

Random interesting information
-The X rating used to be the common “worst-rating” option. In the early 90’s it had become so commonly associated with Pornography that it was replaced with NC-17.

  • The PG-13 rating was brought about essentially by Gremlins and Temple of Doom. There had been a bit of an uproar about those movies getting PG ratings.

Thing was… that wasn’t porn. They did some comparison shots of nude/sex scenes from movies that had gotten NC-17/unrated ratings vs. R ratings, and the speculation as to why. For the most part, the NC-17/R ones either showed same sex activity doing the same thing as a hetero R one, or a lingering shot of a woman’s O face.

In any case, it was BS and made me very angry at the ratings system and happier than ever at the Internet and user-created IP that is out there and gaining notoriety.

Haven’t had a chance to listen to the cast yet, look forward to it.

Last time I checked This Film is Not Yet Rated was available for Netflix IW. Definitely worth the time to watch it!

I guess it’s a matter of semantics. It may have not been produce by the porn industry, but some of the material there was certainly pornographic in the sense that it was intended to illicit a sexual arousing response. My point was I didn’t feel comfortable watching it. Your point, which is the more relevant one, is that the MPAA ratings system has such a poor method of rating that comparable material is ambiguously rated based essentially on who’s submitting it.

Either way, I still hate the MPAA.

Hyper-duche was the name of my band in high school…

…It had been a while since I got one of those in.

I am still so amazed that i got picked this week. My jaw almost hit the floor. The rest of you all have far better solutions than mine. It is just awesome to be in the same league as all you great writers.

Thanks, for your discussion on this weeks show and I’ve obtained “This Film is Not Yet Rated” and will watch it soon to understand how your system works over there. I’ve listened to The Geek Out Podcast, where they mentioned many crazy stories of this organization and the music industry.

Inter Departmental Memo

From: Agent Omra, SW Regional Unit

To: S.H.E.I.L.D. Robotics Division, ATT: LT Scott

Subject: Maintenance/Replacement Request

Yo Scott, this Life Model Decoy you sent us for posting in Texas is malfunctioning. The Sean-Bot is suffering memory deterioration, and is even showing signs of some kind of Robo-Dyslexia if such a thing is even possible. It shows up the most when he is reading, especially if it has SciFi references in it; such as ‘Xur and the Kodan Armada’.

Please expedite a replacement as soon as possible before any further blatant flubs happen and HYDRA catchs on to the fact that the ‘real’ Sean has been ‘activated’ and is involved in Operation HornDog.

THANX.

PS: The rumor going around is that the malfuction was caused by his wife TAZING him for being on the computer too much!

I hope this little jab is tame and tongue-in-cheek enough not to offend too bad… :frowning:

Explaination: Sean claimed on the Podcast that no one’s Solutions included the Kodan Armada, my Team Ruthless’ Solution did… Hence the little jab.

I love that you call it “a little jab” with a picture of Conan attacking with a sword on the very next line.

Regarding Teryl Rothery’s hotness, she had a great scene in Babylon 5, The Lost Tales as a reporter…

That little cirlce thing on her dress is a camera.
"My director said it would help make sure people would look at the camera… a lot. "

Indeed, I’m in the UK and our ratings system is not quite the same but as an avid movie fan how US ratings affect productions and the final product was of interest. It helped of course being a long term fan of Kevin Smith I was familiar with his views so the secretive and questionable methodology of the MPAA wasn’t a complete surprise:)
