#226: Galaxy Quest, SG-1 Mobius, FSL 2.0 Round 2

This week: We leap into a short but sweet self-deprecating sci-fi arc with a viewing of Galaxy Quest. We return to our Stargate time travel arc, joining SG-1 for a full-circle jaunt to the past in Mobius. We tackle a new challenge in the Fantasy Sci-Fi League 2.0 round two. And we run down the week in geek, including a real-life Tron light cycle on eBay, a new Disney interpretation of the Sorcerer’s apprentice, a new B-movie recommendation from Sean, and Ebert’s video game comment apology.

Ooo, early for the holiday. Just managed to finish last week’s a couple of hours ago so I missed my voting chances. I’ll have to be better this week…

doing the Alpaca Boogie

I figured Sean was going to mention Solarquest a few seconds before he said it. I still have it on my game shelf.

The main thing that made it a bit of a pain to get around the board was trying to get out of the gravity of Jupiter or Saturn.

Have not had a chance to listen to this yet because… there’s a Star Wars marathon on Spike for the Force of July (GROAN) but.

I love Galaxy Quest, so thank y’all for doing this! It’s one of the three sci-fi movies that my mom loves (the other two being The Fifth Element and Independence Day) and now that I’ve actually seen some Trek and found out about Trek fandom, I get like twenty times more fun out of it. And since I loved it from the first, that’s like a metric buttload more fun. But it’s one of the weirdest, most awesome mother/daughter bonding experiences that I’ve had, and I’ll always treasure that.

Honorable mention! Yeah!!!

This podcast had me in tears of laughter last night. Shiney disco balls, vented shafts, and Stark in a banana hammock! Brilliant! Then you guys read my solution and I nearly woke up the neighborhood screaming in disbelief and joy! Plus you guys talked about one of my favorite movies ‘Galaxy Quest’, Oh My Crom this podcast is made of OSSIM!

You know, the whole cast this was the soundtrack of my mind…

//youtu.be/kxsYbdihttc

well that and this

//youtu.be/AjPau5QYtYs

I don’t think I stopped laughing through most of the 'cast. Going to have to try to listen to it again.

Congrats to you on being this week’s challenger and to all of the honorable mentions!

Congrats, Baconfaaaaaace!

I’m with you there! Bouts of guffaws! Sooo much fun!

I’ve dl’d Gatecast- 18 min in, at this point!

And Juan, baby, it’s all love, man- all love! And not just me!
I think you may remember the twitter-fest of Juan names!
Some of which YOU contributed! LOL!

I desperately wished I could have group-watched GQ with everyone!
As it was, I had good company with the Puddytat!
Her geek enculturation continues…!

Regarding the Goa’uld helmets…
In the original Stargate Movie, when Ra and his minions (unnamed in the movie) take off their helmets, you see every layer of the mask come off; at the time it was probably one of the coolest things I had ever seen.
In the first episode of SG1 they had Aphophis and his Jaffa come in with their serpent helmets, and yeah… when they open them you can see a lot of times the people inside get thrown back a little bit. I think that’s why in the later years the Jaffa didn’t have helmets…
Not to say that the Goa’uld are not one of the coolest looking sci-fi aliens out there.

Congrats Baconface and Good Luck this week.

To Audra’s point about the female roles in the film. From IMDB:

Laliari is the first main role Missi Pyle landed in a feature film. Her part was expanded after the producers noticed Sigourney Weaver was the only female main character.

There was probably a moment in the production where someone went, “Oh craaaap! We’ve just become a parody of a parody.”

Great Podcast - Nice addition of the disco ball (only cos that’s the approach I went for). Got to love GQ, although I haven’t watched it in a LONG time, I can still remember bits of it.

Keep up the good work…

Congrats Baconface, your solution was awesome.

Hi All! I’m new to the forum’s! But I’ve been listening to your podcast for awhile now & absolutely love it! I just wanted to mention briefly, that even though I haven’t had a chance to listen to your newest podcast yet! But seeing as how you talked about the movie, “Galaxy Quest”, my cousin is an actor and he was the actor who played the alien who got shot & looked up to Alan Rickman’s character! Just thought that would be a cool little bit of news! His character’s name was Quellek! And I also had an almost chance to meet Alan Rickman recently he was leaving the theater of my cousin’s play!

Welcome to the forum Sa7Fire! Your cousin (Patrick Breen) was also in Men in Black wasn’t he…as Reggie I think.

Sean, I totally played Solarquest when I was a kid, and I don’t think we ever finished a game either… my siblings got bored. But I loved the idea of zooming around the Solar System  Looking at the wikipedia site for the game, I’m pretty sure we had the Apollo 13 edition (I remember trying to fold the board the right way).

And I also love Risk, but rarely find anyone who will actually play it with me :frowning:

Welcome, and while you are cool for being on this forum, this now makes you awesome! (You are awesome anyway.)

So I was just on IMDB while listening to the end of the cast, strengthening my resolve to swing by Fry’s on the way home and pick up the Blu-ray of Galaxy Quest because I don’t know why I haven’t yet, and a few other fun things in the cast: Dian Bachar (Choda Boy from Orgazmo, several voices from South Park, most notably Chris, Satan’s boyfriend for several episodes) was “Nervous technician”, Brandon Keener (Garrus from Mass Effect) was “Technician #2”, Robin Sachs (Ethan Rayne from Buffy) was Sarris, and Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall, Purple Almighty Tallest from Invader Zim) was the announcer at the convention.

Also, I did not get this until I browsed the trivia page: A very subtle joke is that Guy believes his character is now safe since he is the security chief and has a name on the revival series. The named, main character security chief of the revival series this movie spoofs, “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987), was killed off in the first season.

Thanks 'Talos! I didn’t mean to crater the discussion into a big gender argument. I just thot it was interesting that despite the parody I got the sense of the “parody of the parody” too.

Welcome Sa7Fire! Cool Galaxy Quest connection.

I have to say (jumping into the “big gender argument”) that I think Audra is right - sure, Galaxy Quest is making fun of the conventions but at the same time, particularly where gender presentation is concerned, they’re muddier than they are with the rest of the parody. Or so I think. And I think she’s spot on with the subject/object observation (which in my mind goes with the cinematic male gaze default that came up a few 'casts ago). Lalliana(sp?)'s role in the story is supportive to the development of another character, and there are always characters like that in narratives. The issue is that the female characters are generally restricted to those kinds of roles, as Audra pointed out in terms of the characters here.

On Parody as a form - it’s complicated. Where satire/parody etc are concerned, most of it is in the eyes of the beholder (like that there are reportedly people who took Stephen Colbert at face value…), which is part of what makes it so fun and cool, but also makes it so ripe for interpretative disagreement.

Chuck said that choosing not to comment on a societal norm is not reinforcing it necessarily, and he’s right, in general terms. However, if you look at the societal structures something is created within, and it does reflect the culture in which we live - merely going along with structures of oppression, however, does open a work up to criticism to how it interacts with lived experience and practice. At least with GQ (which is a movie I always enjoy watching), not commenting on the norm makes someone like me notice that they haven’t commented, and draw conclusions therein.

Though it’s not strictly germane, I saw this last week and thought it was a really interesting question and conversation. For those loathe to click through, Al Franken was asked who his favorite feminist fictional character was, and commented upon the relationship between representations in fiction and real life. Really interesting

I’m glad you enjoyed the end of my last FSL entry  It felt like the most natural way to close it up!

Bravo. Well said, Casilda.

Thanks for the link! I’ve never thought of Cathy in WH as a feminist, but huh, interesting.

And heh, I found the discussion on Sean and Chuck’s past board game rivalry/shenanigans to be most fun to listen to. Poor Audra!

Oh, and Sean’s movie recommendation - Timer - has Anya from BtVS as the main character, so that’s one more reason to watch it. (it was why I watched it before knowing anything else about it. :D) Me, I found it to have an intriguing concept if a bit too cutesy at times - not so much the best movie ever, but ultimately pretty interesting and worth a watch especially if it’s on Netflix streaming. No bunnies though.

Oh, one more thing. WOOOO Baconface!!! Love it!
