#222: Heist Movies, The Italian Job, Listener Calls

This week: We check out one of Chuck and Sean’s favorite heist movies, The Italian Job. We take a slew of listener calls. And we run down the week in geek, including Transformer 3’s new Fox replacement, a Minnesota college’s R2D2ish observatory, Michael Bay’s take on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Capt. America and Thor’s newest press photos.

Totally agree about the A-Team trailers! I’d heard about the movie, and really had no interest, although I loved the TV series.

Cut to Ironman 2 movie . The A-Team trailer blew me away! It looks like complete frakking awesomeness! Buy a ticket, leave your brain in the car, and have fun.

Cannot Wait.

Snoochie boochie noochies…that would be a Mallrats reference. Speaking of which should be arriving hot on the heels of the Heist arc. Proving again that GWC is the source for all that is cool, not just sci-fi.

Robert Downey Jr is like 5’8"

EDIT:
Was that Darrell from Da Fixers Hideout?

Everyone should check out Seth Green in the movie Can’t Buy Me Love. The movie is so-so but looking at a young Seth Green is cool.

The duschest thing we saw Dukat do on screen is in season 3 Civil Defense episode…

When he just stood on the Command Center laughing at everyone hiding under the consoles from the automatic phasor. And then instead of helping them, he tried to negotiate Kira for letting Cardassian troops back on the station. Then when Kira refused he just left…

Only that he couldn’t leave, because the computer treated him beaming off as abandoning his post… that’s what i call instant karma…

YESSSSS!!! The Visitor gets a mention!

Any reason Audra’s “Boned at the Eye of Jupiter” line wasn’t in the intro?

(I know, I know, the show is free, quit complaining.)

Models

I agree to a certain extent about models and acting. You have to remember that on a photoshoot, the model has a role to play. So a good model can convey a multitude of emotions to fit the concept. By acting (posing), they hopefully can convey something to the viewer.

Also they are used to following instructions and being directed. Whether they can deliver lines is another matter.

Mr T Cartoon

I’m sure that I have an annual at home somewhere, it wasn’t half bad for an 80s cartoon.

Minis

Never seen the Italian Job (only the ending)…I find it funny that at least in the UK, the original mini was seen as a car for university students, etc. Fast forward and now it’s a prized car that is out of reach for most students. They do look semi nice though.

Good point. Another one who I was surprised no one mentioned was Tricia Helfer who’s first acting role was the Battlestar Miniseries. There are probably plenty more examples of good actors who were models first, and even more examples of bad actors who were models first!

I pity the fool who hasn’t seen Mr. T!

She got boned in rendering the 'cast (and it sounds like a couple clips got offset as well.)

I was thinking about all the things said about the basic structure of a heist movie. And I think I figured out why Trash was so many people’s favorite episode of Firefly. Trash is a classic heist story, told in all the classic heist movie structures. add great writing and fun continuity to the entire episode, we have one of the most entertaining firefly episodes.

I might’ve missed it in the 'cast, but just to throw another kudo Seth Green’s way, he was of course the character Oz in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, in which he played Willow’s boyfriend/rock band member/sometimes werewolf. And true to form, he was probably the coolest guy on the series, ever. So his ossim is thus sealed with the Joss Whedon connection.

Amen.

listening to the 'cast, after hearing my call abotu seeing Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr…ok , yeah I fainted…I admit it.

I loved the listener calls, so much fun to hear everyone!

I have to agree that In the Pale Moonlight is one of the best DS9 episodes (one of my top 2, the other’s Duet), and I might even say, one of the best Trek episodes ever. Thee who hast not seen it… get to it!

On Dukat, I really felt badly for him by the end. The stuff with his daughter just broke my heart, but a sure way to get my sympathy (and make me cry in movies) is for parent child relationships to be harmed or destroyed. :frowning:

And if I may take a moment to plug the book club… the current book is really cool, Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom; and we’re starting up the next selection process, so if anyone has a book they think would be a great group read, be sure to let us all know about it

I have another great DS9 standalone episode for you: Our Man Bashir.

It had two of the staples of Trek standalones: holodeck malfunction and transporter malfunction, but added some great over the top James Bond action. Not the best overall episode, but absolutely a fun standalone.

.
Nana Visitor’s deliberate bad russian accent alone was worth the time.

Another great podcast as ever guys. The fire display sounded awesome, and I have to say thta if you liked that then you will have to give the Burning Man Festival a try. I went there a few years ago, and it was indescribable experience. Visually it was like a Mad Max version of Woodstock!

I have to say that I love Mini’s - but not the Mini Cooper, as the Mini Cooper is not a mini - and driving around listening to Self Preservation Society in a 1980’s mini is a fantastic experience.

I do have one beef though, and that is with the remake of the Karate Kid. On paper, the idea of having Jackie Chan as the teacher is awesome, as who wouldn’t want to be taught by Jackie Chan. The problem lies in the fact that Jackie Chan practises Kung Fu, an inherently Chinese discipline, and Karate Japanese - VASTLY different cultures!

Your comment of all-star movies reminded me of the forthcoming action movie The Expendables. I have seen a few trailers for the film, and it seems like a reimagining of the 80’s action cheese fests. The cast list is quite frankly amazing though. Arnie, Stallone, Bruce Willis, Stratham, Jet Li, and Lungdren, to name but a few. The lines seem to have their tongues firmly in cheek (“What happened to you?” / “I had my ass kicked, what does it look like!”). Time will tell if it is actually any good!

Picard being right - I always liked the episode where Q threw him to meet the Borg…

Picard and Kids - With kids there is no rule book, however with starfleet, etc…there are rules and procedures to follow, guidelines. Picard knows what to expect and is trained to deal with those situations.

Ironically, they travel to experience the unknown, but to go into the unknown with a partner and/or kids he finds it hard to do…It’s weird that he can be form close relationships with aliens rather than someone close to him.

Oh another question that I thought of while listening to the podcast

  1. Anyway for people outside US to call or leave voice clips/messages

  2. I thought I was into my Sci-fi but people here make me look like a total newbie. Do you guys take notes because the indepth analysis that you come out with is breathtaking and contains some many layers.

  3. How did you guys get into Sci-fi in the first place, I’ve always been interested in space/sciences so it was a natural progression for me.

I have to say that I still haven’t seen BSG or Stargate (I’m scared to even try and watch all 10 seasons of SG and with BSG, I’m only on episode 4 of series 1.

Chuck, you didn’t dig the Cooper you drove, but maybe the mini Coopers drive better once Wrench has worked 'em over.

One nice thing about old-school heist movies like original Italian Job and The Hot Rock is that they’re low-tech. More make-plans-get-in-get-out. They don’t have that kind of quantum mechanics/all-seeing computerized godlike power thing that’s essential to most newer heist flicks. Which, don’t get me wrong, I love.
