#221: Heist Movies, Ocean's 13, Firefly, Serenity

This week: We talk relationships and why it’s great to have friends in Ocean’s 13. We ask whether that’s right in Objects in Space and wrap up our Firefly arc with some discussion of Serenity. And we run down the week in geek, including more details of the upcoming movie Splice, speculation on whether or not Fox’s size zero facilitated her departure from Transformers 3, possibilities regarding a Mass Effect movie, and a farewell to Atlantis after its final return to Earth.

wait wait wait, that is so not what Mal said.

Mal said either get out of the way if you don’t want to help, or do your part and help get the ship past the reavers. if you are not doing either and try to get in my way, i’ll shoot you.

The exact quote is

So I hear a word out of any of you that ain’t helping me out or taking your leave, I will shoot you down. Get to work!

That is very different from what Sean and the Crew are saying “if you don’t do as i say i’ll shoot you”.

They are given a choice. Mal is not threatening them to do as he says. They can choose not to and stay safe at the planet, or stop complaining about what they have to do to their friend’s bodies and do what they have to do to get pass the reavers.

Mal at no point said “My way or the high way”, certainly not the way Sean quoted him. He might had said if you don’t follow my plan, then get off here, but he did not say follow my plan or i will shoot you. And frankly, he is the captain, and he gave an order, and he gave them a choice to not obey his order, just don’t stop him from following through with his plan. It sounds reasonable to me.

Okay, here’s a very stupid, very basic questions (so forgive me).

Why are Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13 called what they are? What’s the meaning of the “12” and “13” numbers?

Ocean’s 11 is becuase there’s 11 guys in Danny Ocean’s gang, right?

Ok, it’s never really discussed but here is my thought on that: the 12 and 13 count the extra members of the core crew that are expanded in each movie.

For instance in 12 it’s Tess and in 13 it’s Benedict and Roman. I don’t normally count Bruiser because he was in the first one as well and not counted.

Just my opinion though.

Thanks Sean. I feel better knowing that even a High Level Master Ocean’s Expert (HLMOE) like yourself is as confused as me on that particular post.

Well, I just finished watching Ocean’s 13 (first time) literally 10 minutes ago.
And I LOVED it. Having seen 12 and 13 only once, at this point I like 13 better because I feel less confused about it.

Benedict at the end of TV was hilarious. Great moment!

But I still don’t get what Toulour was up to however.

In 13 Toulour was working for/with Benedict to get the diamonds. Other than breaking Willie Bank, the diamonds were Benedicts real goal and he thought he could do an end-around with Toulour to get them.

I thot it was a nice touch at the end to prove that Danny and crew were the best. At the end of 12 I felt that the crew only got away with it because of LeMarc. Toulour was the better thief.

Sean/Chuck, as an Oceanses scholar, do you know if there are there any DVD extras that make a certain edition of the flicks a must-own?

Yup, I absolutely agree here. They did have a choice. He would not have come down on them for not participating in his plan, just if they actively got in the way of the plan.

Yes, Chuck and Audra need to watch Lost at some point.

Hey, Sean, for all those “unanswered” questions, check out the following link:

Here there be spoilers…

It’s one guy’s response to a humorous video that had 100 unanswered questions about Lost. From his POV, and mine, most of the questions were either answered, hinted at, or unimportant. Only a few were left completely hanging.

The biggest mystery of all was the only one left completely unanswered and I was glad. I think any direct answer would have been a let down in the end. Instead, that is the thing we can continue to discuss for years to come when Lost comes up in conversation.

“objects” is my favorite. Can’t wait to listen at work tonight.

Just into the 'cast, but…

I saw “Moon” awhile back. I like Sam Rockwell, he was very good it in. But the story - left me depressed and wishing I hadn’t invested the time to watch it. It gave me nothing. I like cerebral SciFi - this one didn’t do it for me.

I decided a long time ago now, that I no longer care if a movie is considered “good” or “art” -I consider a film “good” if it gives me something, if it doesn’t, then, oh well.

Yes, it definitely was not an uplifting movie, but I certainly enjoyed the movie myself.

I liked it a lot, actually. Was right up there with Hurt Locker for me last summer. Thought it was really well done Sci Fi. IMHO, the ending was actually very uplifiting. Really showed how good Sam Rockwell is.

I agree with Hansioux too. He gave them the option to stay at Haven or help him get to Miranda, if they tried to interfere with his plan then he’d shoot them.

This is how it is. Anybody doesn’t wanna fly with me any more, this is your port of harbor. There’s a lot of fine ways to die. I ain’t waiting for the Alliance to choose mine.
[shoots Alliance soldier crawling from wreckage]
I mean to confound these bungers. Take my shot at getting to Miranda. Maybe find something I can use to get clear of this. So I hear a word out of any of you that ain’t helping me out or taking your leave, I will shoot you down. Get to work!

Yes, that part very final part was - it has been a while since I have seen it and I had actually forgotten that final bit. I largely remember how awful it must be knowing what was waiting for you after those years…

but then again…don’t most all of us have that looking forward to us after so many years…

I’ll probably call this in too, but according to the Serenity novelization, Mal bought the Hover-Mule with some of the money they got from selling the Lassiter.

I may call in for the next call show.
But I may instead do what I usually do which is holler at my MP3 player.
