#218: Iron Man, Star Trek Douchebags (Kai Winn)

So, I’m finally getting around to watching Iron Man, and I have to say that it seems like my copy was made in a Russian movie theatre. But it seems to start off okay. I kind of feel left out with the way new stuff just kind of gets thrown out at me. Definite like on Don Cheedle as Rhodey, vastly superior to the previous incarnation.

I kind of like Samuel L Jackson, a little yes a little no. I think the eye patch was just a little too big and dominated his face. But I did approve of his personality and lines.

Completely unrelated, I have been listening to random old podcasts, went through Alien 3, and the Listen to Ripley rap was pretty awesome.

I don’t think I would be too out of line here if I stated that ‘Dark Crystal’ was Jim Henson’s ‘Avatar’. He invented an entirely new and artificial world using the technology available to him, whereas Cameron used CGI, Henson used physical props, matte paintings, sets and highly inventive puppetry and animatronics.

He was just a little too ahead of his time, and I think the reason his little gem of a movie bombed at the box office was because of bad marketing. Something Cameron did not have to deal with, however Dark Crystal seems to have become a real hit among new viewers thanks to DVD’s. A whole new crop of children have discovered his wonderful work and it has become a bit of a cult classic over the years… which probably explains the interest in a follow up movie.

I think they learned their lesson about bad marketing though, ‘Labyrinth’ did much better than it’s predecessor. I think having a human as the protagonist probably helped too, it gave the audience someone they felt more comfortable relating to.

Thank you Jim for the many laughs and happy memories you bestowed upon us during your very creative and colorful life!

Edit: Oh! And I am looking forward to seeing how they handle ‘The Mandarin’ in Iron Man 3… Favaro said he plans on using him in the next movie, he is going to ‘update’ him. But we have to wait until 2013, he can’t do another IM movie until Cap, Thor, and the Avengers have been produced since the look of the ‘Marvel movie universe’ will be determined by those films.

On the subjet of Bashir and how him deliberately flubbing his lines was unprofessional. Would you say the same of Harrison Ford deliberately flubbing the voice over on Blade Runner?

I fully expect that I’m coming late to the party here, but Sean have you seen ‘DM of the Rings’ ?

I’ve read it three times through now and still can’t look at it in the office as I laugh out loud too much. Sends up both Roleplaying and Tolkein while showing affection for them as well. They even refernce Conan a few times!

Reading it again now I’m a listener to GWC, I did actually wonder if Shamus and Sean might be the same person.

Have you seen this one? It’s brilliant!

Nice!

Thanks TPO!

that was Frakkin awesomeness

That was probably the best thing ever.

Haven’t had a chance to listen to this yet (I AM DYING TO) but I wanted to get in on the Dark Crystal love.

It terrified my best friend when we first saw it because we were four, but I loved it. (Despite being terrified of absolutely EVERYTHING else when I was a kid. Not even kidding, I was terrified of pepper until I was eight.) It made me want to go into special effects, which didn’t work out, and it made me want to make my own alien world with absolutely no humans in it. I tried to do mine as a comic, but I could never think of a strong enough story. Pity.

I agree, this really was the Avatar of its time. If it had been marketed to the age group who seems to be re-finding and liking it now, I think it would have done so much better. As it is, I got the Blu-Ray for my birthday and will be giving it a re-watch this weekend

I’m not quite done with the 'cast yet, but isn’t the thing Stark uses to level his particle accelerator the shield from the Captain American TV show starring Reb Brown?

Here is a picture:

I haven’t seen it yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised. The shield (traditional version) makes a cameo in the first movie (it’s in the background in his workshop.)

Finally got to see it…answer to your question…yes that was what Stark used to shim the accelerator section. But it’s not the same one from the old TV show.

So where are the pics of Chuck with a battery and a box o’ scraps?

Dark Crystal - I love it!

IM2 - Great interview with Matt Fraction. And maybe I’m aging myself but Howard Stark’s future city footage in the film reminded me of Walt Disney’s footage introducing his plans for Florida…specifically EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow).

About Thor, I have no idea about the film or about the “Thor Lore” in general, besides Ashley Edward Miller who is working on the script for the movie.

I know him from being on the writing staff of T:TSCC and Fringe and he gave great insight into his work when he was on the Skynext and Geek Out Loud Podcasts with Derek and Steve.

If anybody is interested, here’s his Twitter handle: http://twitter.com/ashman01

He posted this link on twitter.

Cool.

(The only twitter I follow are robot butlers. I am hoping Jarvis starts one soon.)

Well I know it’s late to the game, but I was catching up on my BSG Podcasts today at work, and I was listening to Podcast #218, and you mentioned NASA’s retiring of the Space Shuttle’s, specifically the final launch of Atlantis (STS-132). Ironically the reason I was catching up with the podcasts is, I was down in Florida with my family to see the launch!

I have to say it was pretty cool. We were in Titusville, FL and got to see it. If I’m correct, there are two other planned launches (Discovery & Endeavour) so if you’re interested in seeing one, go now!!! I have a couple of suggestions if you do decide to go.

We were staying in Kissime, FL, Due to the fact that looking on line that most of the hotels in the area near the Kennedy space center were either all booked that weekend, or were listed with (1) star. A few of the ones I saw in the area, looked sketchy, and had the look and feel of a CSI: Miami murder scene. If I could do it all over again, I’d either stay closer to the KSC (at a nicer than 1 star hotel) or:

Leave VERY early. Apparently a drive from the Orlando area to the KSC is just over an hour, it’s somewhere around 50 miles. This trip via car, took over 3 hours. We left Kissimee at around 11:00 and we arrived at the intersection of RT 1 and RT 50 around 2:00.

Some of the locals have said since the announcement of the Shuttle fleet’s retirement, crowds have increased dramatically, so I’d plan accordingly.

All in all, it was very cool. I only had a sony cybershot digital camera, and I got some cool pics, my girlfriend got it all on video.

Of course, with all that traffic going into Titusville, there was traffic going out, as well. But we decided to kill some time at the Astronaut hall of fame, Which I also recommend checking out…

Anyhoo I figure I’d throw that in there, even if it is somewhat belated. Here’s A link to the pics I took.

P.S. We went to Epcot the next day, and All I could think of is: Wow, kind of like the Stark Expo…

I know what you mean. I went to the first launch after Columbia, and it took 2.5 hours to get back to the University area of Orlando (east side of town). My fellow interns and I avoided the worst of the traffic on the way out there, but were right in the middle of it on the way back.

And as I said, one of my coworkers actually got Friday off to sit in the bleachers in KSC to watch the launch.

Nice pix, Devine!

Thanks for sharing the pictures Devine! I’ve stayed in Titusville most of the hotel/motels were old then…that was in 1984 trying to see Discovery’s first launch. It got scrubbed on the day I flew down. Launched 2 days after I got home so I saw it on TV. :frowning:

I would look for some place to stay in New Symrna or maybe a little farther North on RT 1…if I decide to try for one of the 2 remaining launches.

If you want to hear more geeking out about Iron Man 2 you can listen to Monday’s Talk of the on NPR here.
