1up.com RIP

Well i just saw the news today that 1up has been bought out by UGO. UGO said they would keep most of the staff but it seems that they meant cleaning staff 'cause they fired most of the current writers and podcasters. It makes me sad. 1up was the site i went to for almost all of my gaming coverage. Also their podcasts made up a good portion of my listening pleasure. Now that will be no more. They laid off almost 30 people. Sad times indeed.

Here is the link to the news article that was posted on Joystiq. I would post the one from 1up but seeing as they are now owned by the bad company they would kinda not post all of the story.

EDIT: Oh this transaction also killed EGM which was one of the first gaming magazines i ever bought some 20 odd years ago when it first came out and i was first getting into gaming. It was always one of my favs. Was…

Wow this is really terrible, I listened to most of their podcast.

I wonder what they are trying to achieve by firing all of them. Killing competition ? Or like in the movie other people money, maxing on the 1up stock then putting it to the ground.

Its truly terrible for the staff and for us. Where will we find quality entertainment. I loved the GFW podcast with the Brodeo and the new one.

Oh well I hope people never go to their site again.

I’m truely sad for them, too. They fired a lot of my favorite people. The podcasts are all gone, and I really enjoyed those.

Ziff Davis has been having some serious financial trouble for, what, a year now? It seems like they sold off 1up to stay afloat.

The sad news was delivered to me by my friend Tosus on google talk. It began like any other day…it started like any other conversation. He said “I have bad news”

And then I learned what 1up was and feel bad I missed out on it lol

This is really sad news. I loved their podcasts, but not all is lost. Part of the people who got layed off started a new podcast called Rebel.Fm, it should replace the 1UP FM podcast. You can get the first episode from here

You gotta love them interwebs.

Yeah it’s awesome. The man will no longer hold our podcasts down!

Actually, I have not liked Ugo since my Everquest days. This move jsut confirms my feelings about them from the beginning. Money grabbing gold sellers buying out domains from under the communities that attempt to use them.
