1/2010 Winner: George R.R. Martin, "A Game of Thrones"

Good news. HBO just announced Game of Thones has been greenlit.

I was seriously beginning to despair that it would ever get a read by the GWC folks. So glad you’re enjoying it!

Now if only A Dance With Dragons would get a release date…

Well…he has to finish the darn thing first! I sometimes despair of that happening as well! I think he’s worse than Jordan! (Robert that is)

I just finished up A Clash Of Kings and as soon as I can spare the time from studying, I’m going to read the rest of the series.

Whenever I read a book like this I’m just amazed by how Martin can keep so many balls in the air, storywise, and keep me interested in all of them. I’m going to have to take the time to read the series again to get a better appreciation for how everything fits together.

That reminds me of an anecdote I heard once - the Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa evidently always maps out his novels in great detail before he writes them. I assume Martin does something similar (as I would, were I to be a novelist).

Just to let everyone know the Warriors anthology is out (or will be soon, I got my copy today). It has the third Dunk and Egg Story. The first two can be found in Legends vol 1 and 2

My wife holds on to these like they were her bible, she has her hardcover versions indexed with stickies.

I’m still plugging away at this one. I just got to the bit with ‘Lady.’ Damn.

No kidding. I can see why she needs them. This is some dense stuff. (In a good way, but still.)

Pike the worst part is that the stickies arn’t for her. She doesn’t need them. She put them in as an easy way to show other people what she was talking about in the text.

That just makes me smile.

Heh, just past the tavern moment with Caetlyn(sp?) and was much amused that the minstrel was named Marillion.

G. R. R. Martin must be about my age.

Ha, I’m literally on this page. I had to stop reading just as he introduced himself.

So yeah, on my fourth or fifth reread of the series, and I love going through and noticing new stuff or stuff I’d forgotten. So I’ll put this in spoilers even though it’s been out forever, but…
Did anybody else completely forget, in the chapter after it was first mentioned, that Jorah was a traitor sent to spy on Dany? The first time I read it, it was a huge HOLY FRAK moment, and while I knew Jorah was a traitor on subsequent reads I didn’t notice it again until the last read-through I did. Yeah, they say right there at the beginning, “Jorah is a traitor who wants to get back to Westeros.” WTF. How could I have missed that?!
Man, that Sansa is piece of work. Damn, girl.

I’m within a few chapters of the end. One question: Did we find out about Snow’s mother? I can’t remember if we got the fact of the matter or speculation from others.

I found the Wiki of Ice and Fire, but am reluctant to peruse for fear of spoilers for the rest of the series.

Pike:
Not as of AFFC, though speculation (particularly involving one pairing that I’ll say in more spoilered text if you want) has been running rampant for years. Many, me included, consider this most popular theory as kind of a given and therefore Martin will probably throw something crazy in at the end :p
(Not sure if that counts as a spoiler, but better to be safe than sorry.)

Finished.

SONUVABITCH! This isn’t like Morgan’s or Stross’ “books in a series” this is frakin’ Tolkien. No wonder everyone is bitching that he hasn’t finished.

And I want to meet the layout genius who put the addendum WITH ALL THE FAMILY CRAP that I’ve been trying to keep straight IN THE BACK!

Still, pretty awesome.

No, that’s almost completely unspoilerly. (Probably completely, but my mind wanders.) Thanks.

Okay, I know I am behind, but am now reading this book. It’s hard to put down, it’s that good! One thing that would help though, is a family tree or character listing. Sometimes it hard to keep straight how everyone is related, and who has married who, etc. I have tried searching online, but most things I have found have spoilers in them, and I have already ruined a few key plot points for myself! Can anyone recommend a non-spoilery site?

Pro-tip: Look at the back of the book!

I was so pissed when I got to the end and realized it was there all along.

I’ve been listening to the Tolkien Professor podcast ever since he showed up on GWC, and something that was mentioned a while back was how some GRRM fans say that it frustrates them trying to keep the names straight, because there’s so many and some people are known by more than one…

Yeah, GRRM’s really got nothing on Tolkien :stuck_out_tongue: It can be frustrating the first (couple of) time(s) through, though.

Oh shit, really?! I have this as an e-book on my Nook, so have not even flipped back there. Thanks, I feel silly now…:o

No, don’t. It should be at the front. What the hell is the point of putting it at the back?!
