Your Top 10 Best Shows of All Time

In no particular order…

  1. the Sopranos. Groand breaking in it’s day and holds up awesomely. Rewards reqatches every time.
  2. UFO. Introduced dark, dark themes before BSG '03 was a twinkle in our eyes…
  3. Babylon 5. Central story. The arcs. Lando & G’Kar. Enough here to keep me entertained for years.
  4. Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Without these shows I doubt movies like Life Of Brian would never have got off the ground. Simply awesomely silly.
  5. Blackadder. Prefer the third but all series great. Season 4 so very, very poignant.
  6. The Goodies. Back when British humour was in a simpler place…
  7. BSG '03. Gripping from the outset.
  8. From The Earth To The Moon. No particular reason, but I find it inspiring.
  9. Star Trek Enterprise. Underrated IMHO.
  10. The Late Show. (it’s Australian). Unique humour that always reminds me of home.
  1. The Young Ones. The short-lived British series (Dr. Who excepted, aren’t they all?) was brilliant and hilarious and perfect from the get-go.

  2. The Wire. Not the most fun show, but the writing and acting and substance made it as good as drama gets.

  3. Cheers. Arguably the pinnacle of the traditional sitcom, and it stayed good through various transformations.

  4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was one of those shows that transported you to another world, and it did it well for the better part of, what, seven years?

  5. The Shield. I can’t think of a drama that A) maintained its intensity & momentum across so many seasons and B) made so few missteps.

  6. Monty Python. Much like The Simpsons, the show is its own genre and worldview. If you’re a fan, it shapes who you are.

  7. Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. For real.

  8. Battlestar Galactica. The gritty reimagining caught my imagination and engaged me like nothing else ever did; hell, I wouldn’t be here having this conversation if not for it.

  9. Community. I just love this show. And I’m quite content to leave it at that. I really can’t explain why I like it as much as I do. But I do.

  10. Deadwood. Some of the most amazing writing and language ever. Not to mention the drama & performances.

Runners-up & Such:

At the time, I was as into Lost as everybody else. But now that it’s over, I never think about it. And the end was a real fart. In retrospect, I classify it with shows like ER, Homicide and NYPD. They were all amazing for sustained periods, but jumped the shark in ways that, to me, really discounted the series as a whole. When casts and writing staffs change over many years, is it fair to hold four substandard seasons against a show that ran for 10, 12 years? I dunno. But I do.

Sopranos was groundbreaking and is responsible for this golden era of TV we’re enjoying. But after season 4, I felt like it became pointless – except for the final season, in which it argued against the show’s very value, and went out of its way to point how how unlikable the its world was.

Rescue Me had the same core of people on either side of the camera, but it was, increasingly, up-and-down. Still, in those early seasons, I said it was the best show on TV.

There’s never been anything quite like Northern Exposure.

Breaking Bad is also about as good as TV gets.

Freaks & Geeks and My So-Called Life were perfect one-season-and-done shows.

For my money, it’s too early to tell on Homeland, Spartacus and Game of Thrones.

Arrested Development is total perfect genius, no question.

Dexter’s Laboratory is probably my favorite cartoon if we grant Simpsons status as its own genre.

Kung Fu. Every episode had a lesson!

Cosmos. Nuff said.

Pardon the Interruption and HBO’s Real Sports.

60 Minutes.

Yo! MTV Raps was the best long-running musical showcase I remember. Over the long haul, it never diluted itself with mediocre content like the genre platform Headbanger’s Ball.

The Letterman Show of the 80s/early 90s may have been the pinnacle of the talk show. It was an excellent blend of interview-talk, monologue, and creative bits.

As someone who digs talk shows and music, I thought The Henry Rollins Show was a real gem. It had an amazing way of capturing live performances by the musical guest.

That’s what I think.

Sweet fucking Jesus. I realize lurking and swooping in to pick apart a statement with some minor distinction is your way of being friendly and making conversation, but do you need to? We could get that shit at SyFY.com. Seriously. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s funny the first few were automatic. the bottom ones not so easy…lot of TV in the resume…

Honorable Mentions:
– the V remake (I just found out it was canceled a few weeks ago and I’m still livid!)
– Cheers (one of the last truly great sit-coms I ever watched)
– Hill St. Blues…used to watch it with my mother when I was younger, I doubt it holds up today much like other shows (like Knight Rider, geesh that’s an AWFUL watch now :o )
– Star Trek TNG, would have been #11…loved DS-9 more though

  1. Heroes…if only it had an ending…
  2. Sliders…my first sci-fi show I was hooked on…been re-watching the 5th season lately too, it was much better then I remember it, shame O’Connell walked on it…
  3. Drawn Together…short lived, but my God was it funny!
  4. Star Trek DS-9…loved it cause it was sooo much grittier, the station was cool, and the Defiant was bad-ass!!!
  5. Night Court…my favorite sit-com of all time…
  6. Farscape…despite my rage when I saw the show’s finale and my rush to Amazon to buy the Peacekeeper wars, the Pilot character alone was amazing!
  7. Star Trek…used to watch it on an 11" TV at 6pm on Saturday Nights in black and white in the kitchen with the tin foil antenna hooked up to the cabinet (and every three weeks they’d show that awful “Apollo” episode though), it created the weekly sci-fi TV series as we know it…
  8. South Park…gets better and better each year (well maybe not this year, but still, for a show like that to be funny for 15 years is amazing)
  9. the Shield…simply put, the best and most compelling cop show ever…
  10. BS-G 2003, greatest show I ever saw…once I watched the mini-series on DVD I was hooked and it changed my life in so many ways and lead me to find this place!

i’m going by watchability. Favorites like BSG, The Wire, Mad Men, & Lost didn’t make the cut because although they might make a regular top 10 list, I don’t think I would watch them over and over.

  1. How I Met Your Mother- I gave myself one slot for a sitcom. Ask me again tomorrow and I’ll say Community. Or Seinfeld.
  2. Kids In the Hall- You can’t go wrong with comedy and guys in dresses.
  3. Angel- Can’t I have “all Joss Whedon programs” as one pick?
  4. The West Wing- mmm dialogue.
  5. Six Feet Under- Wacky, brilliant, sad, excellent cast and guest cast.
  6. Veronica Mars- I don’t want to go anywhere without some snarky Kristen Bell.
  7. TNG- My favorite ST series, hours of quality.
  8. Freaks and Geeks- Although only 18 episodes, highly watchable.
  9. My So-Called Life- Also only one season, with 19 episodes, this might be the show I most consistently rewatch. I am such a chick.
  10. Buffy the Vampire Slayer- This would be my choice if I could only bring one tv show into space. It’s got everything.

Curious. Do you own the shows on your list? I have some or all of 7/10 of these shows.

I own all the top 10 on my list except Deadliest Catch. Although my DVR is set to record all episodes, new or rerun, and I do watch them every time before I delete them.

I own the entire series of five, and portions of another 2. The Shield deserves my money, but it’s so intense, I’ve only watched it once… as opposed to, say, My So Called Life and others I’ve watched a lot more over the years.

Netflix Instant Watch
Twilight Zone
Stargate SG-1
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Futurama
Arrested Development

Own the DVD set
Babylon 5
Star Trek
Star Trek Deep Space Nine
Battlestar Galactica (2003)

Rented from Netflix
Band of Brothers

Good question, I own the DVD set for Firefly (easy cuz it’s just one season.)
I have S1 of Deadwood, S4 of West Wing, S4 of Doctor Who (all were gifts). I would like to have all seasons of all those three shows on DVD.

And, holy crap, with HBO Go, I can now watch any ep of any HBO series anytime (so Rome, Deadwood, The Wire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones)

I have a handful of Star Trek TOS on VHS. And of course, all Star Trek is on on Instant Watch now anyway.

All the others on my list are, fortunately easier available either on Netflix Instant Watch or at the library (if not my local library that other library in my town’s network).

I don’t really feel compelled to own anything. Rather rent or borrow when I want to rewatch.
And, if I need to give my wife ideas for xmas gifts I’ll ask for a DVD set of something.

If any market researchers are reading, almost all the TV on DVD I own, I bought it at either reasonable low prices or substantial discounts. Sarah Connor Chronicles Season 2 for $20? Firefly for $17. Sons of Anarchy season 1 for $19.99? A season of Community, with commentary on every episode, for $20-$26? Buffy Amazon Box deal, the whole series for $100? Hell yes. When it’s affordable, it’s a cheap way to 1) say “thank you” and 2) vote for more. If it’s pricey, like HBO tends to keep its shows… I tend to wait for lower prices. Or never buy at all.

Granted, owning a big box or two of an entire show is an idea that’s becoming more antiquated by the hour. But still…

A season of Community, with commentary on every episode? That sounds sweet. I wanna check that out.

But again, I understand the “thank you” and “vote for more” thing, but (just for me personally) it seems indulgent and wasteful to own something I may only watch a couple times, then not watch again from several years. I barely find time to watch all the great new stuff that’s out.

A local video store has tons of TV series…just about all mentioned in this thread , and rents 'em for $7 for 7 days.

+1

Relax. It was a friendly jibe.

Same here, I own all on mine except the Star Trek’s and Night Court…after watching Knight Rider again after all those years and seeing how AWFUL it was, I fear re-watching Night Court will sour my memories of it, and the Star Treks are too dang expensive to buy right now (though I am netflixing DS9)

I’ve been pretty thrifty with entertainment since becoming a dad, so while I partially buy 'em on principle, I don’t get them unless I’ll use them. Community is a show I love, but it’s always on the cancellation bubble, and since I lurv it, I felt that was important to buy. SarrahChronncles Terminator, I was genuinely curious about some of the commentaries, and there was talk about resolving it with a direct to DVD movie. So that was a vote. Sons of Anarchy, I hadn’t seen season 1, so functional. But stuff like Deadwood, which – as you alluded to, with limited viewing time – is so expensive and requires a certain amount of concentration, I can’t justify ponying up the dough.

I guess my roundabout point is: EVERYONE BUY COMMUNITY. Don’t be a schmitty!

The commentaries I’ve listened to are all good. None of that BS where the cast are just sitting there, watching the episode.

Also, what is this “local video store” thing you’re talking about? Oh, wait: I remember those. They’re all gone here, even in the 'burbs.

And, to undercut my point and reinforce yours: Our local libraries have a really good – albeit apparently random – selection of TV on DVD. And they can order discs from elsewhere in the system. If you’ve never check out your local lib’ary video section, you may very well be surprised.

I’d have to have a bazooka to my temple to really try to select ten, but if we were treating this like some weird form of “Desert Islands Discs”, I guess I’d end up with the following (and it goes without saying, order is irrelevant):

BSG - So say we all. The quintessential space-opera, but thankfully with far less singing (and no aliens, though we still don’t know what Starbuck was). Such exceptional character interactions, focus less on sci-fi and more on the social, military, and political ramifications of extremely difficult decisions. A very complex game of chess, with key game pieces that just so happen to regenerate… =)

Carnivale - I’m not EVEN going to get into this here. Just go rent it, or better yet, buy it…and thank me later. Makes “Heroes” look like a bucket of dust, particularly beyond the first season.

X-Files - This is where I really started cutting my teeth as a geek. While it can be attacked for getting a bit bit for its pant-suit britches by the last few seasons, and losing a bit of direction, the middle years of the run were OUTSTANDING. I may be a pacifist, but if you ever said anything derogatory about my beloved Scully, I might have to slap you open-handed in the throat.

Sherlock - A new addition to the list, but after the season 2 finale, this could possibly be some of the best television writing I’ve ever seen…and that’s looking PAST Moffat’s great recent work on “Doctor Who”, not to mention his “Coupling” years.

Doctor Who - No, I’m not going to get into the pre- or post- editions. The show is the show, full chronology, and though they don’t reference older timelines often, I think they might in the near future, as a tip-of-the-hat. (Knowing that Moffat was a big fan of the earlier Doctors, I would think he’s like to do more than just put the St. John’s logo back on the TARDIS door.)

Torchwood - It took me a couple episodes to warm up, but it was such a familiar-yet-distinct diversion from the Whoniverse, I was dyed in the wool by season 2. And though I did say “Sherlock” has some of the best writing ever done? ‘Children of Earth’ is the reigning champion of the superlative until further notice. Holy Hindu Hamsters, what an AMAZING series.

Good Eats - I. Love. Alton. Brown. I will eventually live in a house that is just one big gorram kitchen, and I will follow this man’s tutelage with fanatical devotion.

Dexter - How can you go wrong with a homicidal protagonist? I submit that you can not.

Six Feet Under - Did an incredible job of evolving characters, advancing the focus of the series encompassing arc without feeling forced, and still rode a close line between dark comedy and drama on a regular basis. Still stands as one of the best series finale episodes I’ve ever watched, and I remember watching more than one episode with my mouth literally hanging open in shock, WHILE tears welled up…now that’s impressive.

Firefly - Writing, casting, production, direction, score…this show had it all. And the network put all those amazing pieces together, gently lowered the beautiful new creature to the soil, let it stretch its powerful little legs…and shot it in the back of the head. I hate you, SyFy. So, so much.

(Honorable Mentions - Eureka, Big Bang Theory, Black Books, Spaced, Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies.)

Hmmm let’s see:
In no order

Firefly
Battlestar Galactica (New)
Enterprise
Deepspace Nine
Frank’s Place
The Venture Bros. (Replacing Magnum P.I.)
Amazing Race (Really depends on the teams first show!!)
Stargate Atlantis
SGU
The old Saturday Morning Bugs Bunny Cartoons ('cause that brings back alot of Old happy memories, to to keep it GWC style, Duck Dodger’s in the 24 1/2 Century would be the top of the cartoon list!!)

Just one point of order: Firefly was Fox’s debacle, not SyFy. Syfy has other crimes to answer for

Force of habit blaming the ails of the geek world on SyFy…heh. Teaches me to vent while I should be working. I know better. Herp derp.

I’m not gonna do it in order cause that’ll take forever.

  1. BSG
  2. Top Gear
  3. Community
  4. How I Met Your Mother
  5. SG-1
  6. Band of Brothers
  7. Good Eats

  9. Modern Family
  10. Comedy Central Presents (BOOM!)
