I don’t know. Maybe it was all the drama surrounding Tom Cruise IRL at the time, but it was really difficult to hope that he survived in this movie.
Characters don’t have to be likeable, per se, but should we really be hoping for their deaths?

Hated this part. No logical reason that everyone is walking toward this “lightning strike”. Just a bunch of lemmings.
Shia would totally be one of those teens.
Well, they got the destruction of the church and God’s wrath thing outta the way early.
The alien ship just farted, correction sharted.
Did you see that mess that came out the back?
To be honest, I didn’t really feel for anyone in this film. Isn’t that strange? The aliens are so powerful. You just admit defeat. Game over, man.
Heh. I was just about to say that.
The dust part really bothered me. There were too many references to 9/11.
It’s not dust from buildings, though. It’s cremains.
It makes sense, 9/11 or not.
Is Manny completely deaf and blind? Frakkin’ city is exploding around him, and he’s ranting about solenoids.
The dust of 9/11 wasn’t all buildings either.
“Safe in your space”
You’ve got kids. Is that something that kids do?
Just strikes me as a coping mechanism against abuse, making me dislike Ray all the more.
Nope. Not my girls, always feel safe with dad around.
I think it’s to create the mood of no one is safe. We don’t feel safe with the characters or the situation. Fear. We are to feel fear and paranoia.
What can they do? It’s the nature of disaster movies to remind us of the worst catastrophe in recent memory. If this movie had come out at a different time, it would remind people of the Chicago fire or the San Francisco earthquake or the attack on Pearl Harbor or…
I live right near a major airport. Planes fly over head everyday. I had nightmares for weeks after this that one was gonna crash into my house.
I don’t know. Both kids went to it very quickly, without struggling for the words, as if it’s something they’ve done often.
As if they’ve never felt safe.
This I didn’t get. All them machines buried. No one ever found one? EVAH?
Yeah. I believe that’s on purpose. You are supposed to think that. Makes you uncomfortable.
The whole thing makes no sense. I guess they buried deep enough that they wouldn’t be found, but why bother? The aliens invaded back when it would have been easier to terraform (martiform?) Earth for their needs, but instead they buried their machines and figured they’d be back some day?
