Spyhunter - what a classic. I downloaded a rom of it a couple of years ago but it didn’t hold up too well as you might imagine.
Loved the oil slick cause you could use just a little at a time (unlike the smokescreen)! ah, memories

I am not sure if I can properly articulate why Tron is so important to me, or why it had such an impact on me as a child. I saw it at a friend’s sleepover birthday party and I was completely and utterly blown away. I remember that after the guys wanted to go play with toys and I said, “I’m going to watch the movie again.” A few of the other guys stayed and we watched it again, and again. Three times I watched it that night. The next day all I wanted to do was be Flynn. I would ride my bicycle around imagining I was in a light cycle hearing that distinct sound in my head.
I just discovered they made a new video game for Tron a couple of years ago:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/fun.games/08/08/tron.game/
How did we not know about this? I must own it!
It defiantly needs its own thread. I would fraking live there. Imagine the storm that would be unleashed just by the “Gungho Iguana vs. Inarticulate wookie” argument! >8F Vampire emote is enamored by the possibilities.
I would visit the GWC arcade. Making the boxes for the arcades is super easy. you just have to do short cuts. Use particle board for all non-load bearing pieces, and if necessary NES, Genisis, SNES, and PS2’s for the guts.
A concept bike inspired by the lightcycles. It does 400mph. For the more sane amongst us, there’s GLTron, with versions for all major platforms.
Another inspired motorcyle is this real-life version of Akira’s bike (the page is Japanese, but the pictures are in English.)
The Cylon Hybrids, the ones on the Basestars, on a number of occasions will finished a sentence with “End of Line”.
Genesis turns to its source, reduction occurs stepwise though the essence is all one. End of line.
I thought it was the coolest thing ever I first heard the Hybrid say “end of line” having grown up on Tron.
A listing of what the Hybrid said can be found here at the Battlestar Wiki Article Hybrid Utterances
So Sean, does that deaf, dumb, and blind kid really play a mean Voyager gun game?
If you lived in an arcade with The Addams Family pinball machine, this should bring back a special kind of nightmare:

Pike, thanks for the link to GLTron, I downloaded it and played for a good hour. Still trying to figure out all the customizations you can do, but nothing is sweeter than changing to cockpit mode and racing neck and neck with an enemy.
As for pinball games, I don’t think anything beats the Terminator pinball game. Awesome sounds, sleek layout, it was so very, very sweet.
I loved that game. Could get really good value out of it starting with just one credit and play for up to an hour or so.
Great avatar, Bugs! Is that you in the drawing?
I gotta leave a few suggestions for new direct to archive movies:
Logan’s Run - Farrah Fawcett’s big screen appearance in her prime…
Omega Man - the Charlton Heston version of ‘I am Legend’ - soon out in a remake starring Will Smith.
Soylent Green - Mmmmmmmm…soylent green… (to paraphrase Homer S).
I feel ya there Stevie! I have downed many a quarter into the Spyhunter game over the years… I still suck at it, but man was that game sweet!
LOL!!! You rock Vim!
Oh hells yeah!! You didn’t get it very much when people were playing but in demo mode it was every minute and 13 seconds. (You get board just sitting there so you start counting things.) Brings it back for me.
OK I called this one in, but it needed to be stated here.
Collectors edition 20th aniversery TRON DVD… special features…
TRON 2.0 !!!
its prolly not gonna happen, but still FRACKING AWESOME if it could get done.
Most mainstream games aren’t as hard as the oldschoolies. you have heatlth gauges, etc now. Those old school games (think contra, R-Type), one hit - boom, you’re gone! Made every second a nail biter!
As a girl geek and former arcade rat- I salute you!
My hubby and I ran out of nickels at Nickel City- or was it Wunderland?- near the end of House of the Damned (faulty memory- forgive if inaccurate), and some of the people who were watching us play, paid for us to finish so they could see the end!
Totally brought me back to the 80’s!
You guys nailed it on that one.
I was raised on OT (Original Trek), I even kept an episode summary book that I painstakingly wrote myself. I have always loved scifi, and yes, I am terribly skeptical about any person claiming not to watch/like/care for in any way, scifi! It really is a tell about who they are and how they won’t fit with you. A lesson in tolerance.
Admittedly, a lot of great stuff passed me by- right around the time I turned 21. I find myself ‘rediscovering’ cool shows and movies that should have been in my geek ouvre. My bad.
Thanks to you, and others in the podcast world, it is never too late to tune in again!
While I am in total support of the Writers, the strike has ‘forced’ me to look for other means of scifi satisfaction. I have never read Lovecraft, and am reading him now. I’m part way through a re-watch of Buffy, and plan on Firefly when I get my discs back.
So. When are you doing Buckaroo Banzai?
Stay awesome!
Mucho monkey love!
me! b!
Check out the sci fi poll online here.
They test your sci fi movie IQ with a set of sound clips.
It’s fun. Recommended to WaterCooler denizens with some holiday time on their hands.
Better late than never! Finally sat down with my fifteen year old son this weekend and watched. I remember seeing it in the theater when it came out and not understanding it at all. This time was much better, though it didn’t help that Flynn and Tron both glowed blue. I suspect part of my better enjoyment this time came from being a computer user now since I wasn’t one when it came out. My son enjoyed seeing the early vision of a cyber world, but he kept saying “you can tell this is an old movie.” A good time was had by all and we enjoyed seeing Pac-Man and Mickey’s cameos.

I remember watching this several times as a kid and enjoyed it. I definitely got more from it now that I am older. It really does hold up well over time.
There was a game (for the PC) that came out a few years back called Tron 2.0. It was really good. If you ever wanted to go in the computer yourself this is a great game to pick up. You play as Alan’s son fighting a virus in the companies system. You can also play the light-cycles as a stand alone game. Lots of fun and still available really cheap.
