Trek for the Newbies

most of the episodes i named meet with Solai’s question. they can be enjoyed as standalones. With exception of Waltz, and that is why I mentioned that it can only be appreciated if one followed the DS9 in its entirety.

For me, who only saw the TOS Tribble episode after the DS9 Tribble episode, I have to say I enjoyed it just as much. Trial and Tribbletions is just a fun episode to watch, as long as the person is aware that TOS existed and can recognize Kirk, Spock, Scottie and Bester… i mean Chekov.

Can’t say that I did. I loved the idea they had at the beginning of having a ship/station that wasn’t perfect…not clean…things broke, making it more real. They seemed to solve the problem far more quickly than I would have liked (which points to my love affair once again of Firefly).

You should have given DS9 a bit more time. It really picks up with the last episode of season two, when the Jem’Hadar are introduced.

As for the “things broke space station” - you’re partially right. But seeing a “Year of Hell” DS9 week for week would also have gotten boring in the long run, plus: Miles is a great engineer, maybe even better than Chief in BSG

One more thing: the concept of having a space station instead of starship did work for DS9 most of the time, sure, they introduced the Defiant so they could go off and explore new places, but most of the time it’s really about character development and character growth: they CAN’T just switch on the warp drive and fly to the next planet, they really have to deal with the bad things happening to them. Take Sisko: he falls in love with a woman and he has to make the relationship work, totally unlike Kirk or Picard who could find a new lover in the next sector. Or the way Nog has to handle his post-traumatic stress syndrome after facing combat. Or Odo and Kira’s relationship. Worf and Dax. Garak and Bashir. Bashir and Miles. The dramatis personae of DS9 are such a close-knit group because they’re on a station and around each other all the time. And the dominion war story arc is the best thing Star Trek has ever had to offer, definitely worth catching up on.

Thank you GalaxyRanger…I will certainly add it to my list based on your recommendation!

also, even though the condition of the station that the Cardassians left it in was fixed rather quickly, but the condition of Bajor and its people weren’t. And that to me is the best aspect of DS9.

Please tell me that references the John LeCarre novel. Or Tinker Tailor with Alec Guinness. Because that would just make my day.

The only Star Trek that I “follow” - and I use that term loosely, given that I just started watching DS9 on DVD last week - is DS9. I’m near the halfway point of S2, I’m actually enjoying it a lot.

Duet, in Season 1, was just amazing. I have no idea how that will be dealt with in the future, but by itself, it’s awesome.

I also like Cardassians in Season 2 (but I’m only on disc 3), with the whole adoptive child/war orphan/rejection of biological parent scheme.

It sure does. I’m growing to like LeCarré’s work, I recently finished The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and that was awesome, very straightforward spy novel. Thinking about reading one of Ian Fleming’s novels as well.

The best Trek series ever, in my mind and I’m willing to bet a cookie that you’re gonna enjoy a whole lot more once the real fun gets going. Trying not spoil anything here.

Casilda, glad to see someone starting the DS9 experience. I personally believe, if someone enjoyed BSG, they should be able to enjoy DS9 if they make it into season 2.

I also enjoyed Cardassians in Season 2. DS9 deals with a lot of social/political issues, perhaps more so than BSG. I feel like sometimes Battlestar shys away from focusing more on the political process. But on DS9, episodes that deals with politics are actually extremely fun.

I’ll toss out the Next Gen episode The Defector as a good stand alone episode for the newbies.

For The Original Series, I would go with another Romulan episode, Balance of Terror.

Now that I think about it, a lot of my favorite episodes are about Romulans. Hmm.
