Thrawn Trilogy - Timothy Zahn

C’baoth was the insane Jedi Clone, who Thrawn found guarding the emperors superweapon storage facility. Later he becomes obsessed with capturing Leia’s children. Hope that helps.

I read all of Timothy Zahn’s Star Wars books, I would definitely recommend Outbound Flight, Allegiance, and Survivors Quest in that order.

Well, I tried some other Star Wars books, just a few, though, and didn’t care much for them, the Thrawn trilogy really stood out for me.

Let’s see… I read The Truce at Bakura, The Adventures of Han Solo, The Adventures of Lando Calrissian, one novel from the X-Wing series and one I can’t remember… ah, part of a duology about Han, Leia, the children or something.

I read up to dark force rising I wanted to finish the trilogy but then the seventh harry potter book came out and I kinda forgot about it. Check out the Darth Bane novel, it’s pretty good star wars book

I read and thoroughly enjoyed them. So much so, I continued to read the books that followed, right up to the just before the book where what they did to Chewie happend. (tryign to be vague so I don’t ruin it for anyone) I just couldn’t bring myself to read it when I heard what happened.

Zahn created a totally immersible world for me. I thought out of all the Star Wars books I read, he was the closest to the feel of the movies. The pacing was extraordniary & the characters development was very satisfying. I felt you got to really know them in ways we hadn’t before.

I also think Kevin J Anderson was the worst thing that happend to the Star Wars 'verse. By the third book in his first trilogy, I was almost rooting for Luke to die because he was so damn annoying.

exactly! I wished a million times they had turned these books into a movie trilogy instead of the dreadful prequels!

Hm, I read one of his Rogue Squadron novels, X-Wing something and it was okay. Someone was building yet another Death Star/superlaser …

Wow, I haven’t thought about these books in a long time. I read them in hardcover when they originally came out and remember really enjoying them. Thrawn is such a brilliant character…understanding a culture through its arts. Awesome.

I remember staying home sick with the flu and borrowed a copy to read while passing time. I wish they made this series into movies - for me, it’s the closest to the look and feel of the movies thus far.

I loved Thrawn, such a great villain.
I think they should have been turned into movies instead of filming the rather dim-witted I-III.

When they were filming Episode 3, my brother, sister and I were hoping just to see a walkthrough of Thrawn. Even just a very quick cameo at the background at the last part where they revealed new viewing deck at Vader’s new ship. Vader after all, talked to a young Grand Moff, right? Alas, it wasn’t meant to be :frowning:

I just finished The Last Command. I think that the trilogy was pretty good. But the ending left me entirely cold. C’baoth was totally meh and I couldn’t wait for the agonizingly long fight to end. Also Thrawn’s death was so unfitting for such a great character and his last words “But… it was so artistically done.” were like WTF, it didn’t fit him at all IMHO. ( I know he looked at other species’ art and learned about them from it, but he is portrayed like a crazy nut who doesn’t care about his own death)

I liked most of the characters, especially Talon Karrde, Thrawn and Mara Jade. It would have also been nice if Mara had finally fought off the Emperor’s influance, instead of completing his final command like that…

All in all it was good, the space battles and tactics really stood out.

A week or so ago, I went up to my dusty attic and rifled through an old box of books. And found my very dog-eared old copy of Heir to Empire. And I’ve started re-reading it. I’m at the part were Leia is doing her lightsaber training —using the little flying ball (as Obi Wan taught Luke).
Great stuff. Thrawn is such different bad guy then Darth Vader and the Emperor —and he’s an example that not all Imperial Fleet leaders were idiots.

Now that I’ve finished Invincible I’ll get on reading this soonish.

So I finished up the trilogy a few weeks ago, and I forgot to post about it! Silly me.

Anyways… I thought it was interesting, I especially enjoyed the further development of the Noghri, I felt that Mara Jade was underused, that Han was kind of a tool, and that Thrawn deserved a more magnificent death.

All and all it was enjoyable, but it doesn’t make me want to pick up the rest of the SW novels.

I think this was a bit before Mara Jade was a fully realized character. I thought of this as a prelude to more interesting adventures.

I read the first two, but my library only has the last one on cassette. Time to check the used bookstores.

I did enjoy them, but I agree with Casilda. Han was kind of a tool. And I know I don’t have all of the story, but what’s the deal with Fey’lya? Is he just a total ass, or is he being manipulated, too?

I got the feeling that Fey’lya was just a total ass. They tried to play it off as “that’s how his species’ culture works,” but if he can’t separate his assholishness from his culture, I’m not sure how I can separate my recognizing his assholishness from mine.

  1. You forgot to say sorry barb.

  2. Fey’lya was an asshole even for a Bothan. I vaguely remember some other Bothans on the council who acted much more reasonable.

I’m almost finished with Dark Force Rising (book 2). So, when I’m finished with these three…what do I move onto next? I want to read more about Mara Jade! I really enjoy her character. The stuff with Leia is zzzZZZZzzzzz right now.

I’m loving Thrawn’s character too. He’s so intuitive. I have to keep reminding myself he isn’t a Sith. On the other hand, I’d luck to throw C’baoth off the nearest cliff. He annoys me.

Edit: Frak the Whut??? “…I’d luck to throw…” Huh??? Yeah…I’m just gonna’ blame that on the drugs…

Well put! That was my impression, too. I just wasn’t sure if there was more to the story.

Sorry Barb! Mea culpa!

I liked Mara too! And yeah, Leia just seems really wishy-washy right now. Should we blame it on pregnancy hormones? j/k!

It’s Pellaeon that’s annoying me. It’s like he can’t decide if he wants to be licking Thrawn’s boots or plunging a knife in his back.

Yeah, Leia’s character was a bit weak, but maybe it’s befitting her position right now? She’s kind of stuck between two worlds (political and Jedi) and pregnant so I guess she’d be kind of wishy-washy. I didn’t get that feeling from Han, though.

And much like Mara Jade, this is pre-badassery Pellaeon. I think Thrawn’s death galvanizes him to become a better leader. Or something.

How about that scene where Thrawn completely deconstructs Han and Leia’s mix-up plan? That was a pretty fun subversion of the usual “FOLLOW THE MILLENIUM FALCON IT’S GOT ALL THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE” thing Star Wars villians usually do. Although I have to admit the whole “4 minutes = 3 people” thing was kind of stretching it.

And then there’s that scene where Thrawn orders the execution of the bridge officer - that was pretty cold. I think Thrawn, before this scene, was pretty bloodless, but after this I viewed him in a much colder light.

Ugh. I have to finish this before I start reading Snow Crash. I’m about halfway through right now.

If you want to continue the Thrawn story, there is a second series of two books called the Hand of Thrawn duology, Specter of the Past and Vision of the Future. I enjoyed them almost as much as the original trilogy. After that there are actually 3 other Timothy Zahn Star Wars books, but I haven’t read them. Supposedly they all also follow the Thrawn story as well. One of them is a prequel to the Thrawn trilogy about the Outbound Flight mission

Not only does the Hand of Thrawn Duology have more of the story, it develops Mara Jade’s character more. It’s good stuff.
