Theology of Baltar

The story of Paul’s letters is interesting… a bunch of them (the literalist, mysogynistic bunch) are considered forgeries, written by Christian Literalists trying to consolidate the early church… it has been argued that Paul was most likely Gnostic, who treated women as equals.

If you’re not familiar with them already:

– Anything by Elaine Pagels, especially The Gnostic Gospels
The Jesus Mysteries, one of my favorite books, has a whole chapter on the subject

The Jesus Mysteries has been on my “summer” reading list for years and I just haven’t gotten to it, but the Gnostic Gospels were really interesting.

Given that I’m not too fond of Paul the historical personnage, and that I’m becoming less and less fond of Paula the Balcubine, well, I find the comparison appealing

If you’re looking for something fun to ready that’s really subversive, though, check out Saramago’s The Gospel According to Jesus Christ. Well written and certainly entertaining.

But Baltar? Guns? I’m still confused.

I can’t let this one go - we don’t hear about Mary of Magdala after the Resurrection but they are from the same time - from what I know (which could be off since the numbering of stuff there is pretty shaky at best) Jesus was crucified in year 32 and he appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus in 37.

Whether or not it was indeed Mary of Magdala who was getting pushed out by other apostles or other women who simply aren’t named in the texts we have today is besides the point. And as bigdamnhero already mentioned, most of the letter attributed to Paul are most likely not actually written by him. Because that’s how getting the Bible together worked.

BSG’s doing an interesting thing with the resonances of Baltar-Jesus (though we know that’s not a map ;)) and the nearly all women followers bit when compared to what we know about the followers of Jesus 2000 years ago! Well that and the wishy-washy-ness of Baltar’s theology

Thanks… subversive is definitely my thing.

What? You want to trapped on starship and starving if you can’t shoot your way to survival?

What was Adama thinking when he gave Baltar those guns? When the food runs out they can start killing each other and solve their food shortage problems by decreasing the demand? Has Adama finally decided that the human race doesn’t deserve to survive?

You are correct. For some reason I thought Paul was younger.

Yep, that was Enzo. I guess the underworld needs a new leader now that Zarek is gone.

That’s a creepy thought, Enzo… ugh.

But he’s creepy in a different way than Baltar’s creepy - is it going to be the competition of the creepy cult leaders?
