The Bechdel Test

You make an interesting point about Hispanic characters, when I was a kid the only Hispanic people I saw on TV were random unnamed kids on Sesame Street (and Maria! who can forget Maria). In terms of literature… most of it was assuming that people were white. That said, most of the stuff I’ve come across as an adult that deal well with not assuming white as the default race of people were written after I was a kid. But I’m still searching for stuff (fiction) that deals well with those things.

[That, and I know a lot of “Latino” literature doesn’t really speak to me or my family’s experience… and again, I read it as an adult, not as a child.]

The Bechdel Test is directed at movies, but it is interesting to apply it to other media. I was somewhat surprised to realize how rarely most TV shows, for example, fail.

Video games (recent ones) probably score better, surprisingly.
