They did a great job of showing no one is quicker than JTK. Uhura is shocked that Kirk knows what xenolinguistics is. Spock can’t believe he beat the test. All of these people are top of the class. But JTK is in a class all by himself.
Reminded me of ‘Galaxy Quest’.

Yes! He’s a step ahead of everybody, pretty much all the time. And Pike knows it. 
Which is why Pike promotes him to first officer over Spock’s protestations.

Personally I think it was so important to establish that in the first film. That was never really touched upon in the series. Kirk was the youngest captain in Starfleet, 34 (in this film he’s even younger). We get an idea in TOS that Kirk is something special. This film did a great job revealing that.
That was cool. Old Hollywood tricks still work.
