He can’t help being a sorrybarb. That being said I do think he was trying to help Eli.
OTOH, I think it’s a fascinating insight into his personality. He’s essentially saying that it all comes down to “nerds vs. jocks”, which certainly colors his relationship with Young and the rest of the military personnel.
Why not both? Being an ass is the only way he knows to be helpful.
So I wonder if Telford knew about the Ursini’s actual plan?
