But that means she’s defying the will of Spock. 
As much as I love Spock, I hate that Troi lost her bodily autonomy in the service of this mission.
That said - I love episodes like this. Political intrigue, danger, double talk.
I love that vaporization effect. 
And here is why Toreth’s great. She gets the tech stuff and discovers N’Vek.
And she killed a traitor to the Empire! Yay!

So I don’t get how this establishes a Romulan defection “pipeline,” so to speak.

It’s nice to have an “enemy” captain be so capable, though.
Troi will pretend to be Tal Shiar every time they need to do this. They’re probably going to run out of expendable sub-commanders fairly quickly, though.
