The timelines are all screwy. Yes. Pike has not met Kirk at this point but Kirk knows Pike. He handed the Enterprise over to him.

They swear they mapped out all the time jumps and that it actually all makes sense. But damn if can follow it.

A lot of the fen criticism of this was that the big ships were too nimble. Acting more like fighters than heavy cruisers.
