In the original script, Gideons beamed onboard and kidnapped some of the crew. They forced them to be blood banks for antibodies. Using the antibodies, they used Odona and a few others to produce deadly germs.

They really could have saved a lot of time and trouble by introducing them to the Klingons.
OTOH, I bet the Gideonites would make excellent Borg drones.
Even after watching the whole thing, I don’t recall ever seeing any of it before now. I’m really pretty surprised I’d never stumbled across it. Neat.
