When I first saw the Shadows, I thot of this entity.

THAT is a good question. I think there was some flames in the movies with phasers. Star Trek III, I think.
See, I never thot of it as evil. Lore was, of course, and he was the only one to communicate with it, so its true motivations were never really known. As far as we can tell, it was just hungry. Feeding on living beings may or may not have been natural for it before Lore got involved. It’s entirely possible that it was young, and Lore’s was the only voice out there to guide it. 
Note that no one ever offers Wesley an apology, something else that would have been a given when dealing with an adult.
Altogether, the adults tend to look pretty foolish in this episode.
