Wait. I thot their weaponry was on par with the Enterprise. The ability to kill off a crew, through shields, and leave the ship intact is a serious technological advantage, I’d wager.

The scene with John transformed was in fact done live with only minor post-production touch-up. Actor Mark La Mura wore a fluorescent orange suit that glowed on the special film used.
Arguably, the aliens are probably right. Look how powerful John is. If even a fraction of their species evolves like him, what happens to the rest?
