ST:The Next Generation 3X10 The Defector - 6/29 @ 10PM ET

Piller noted that elements of the Shakespearean play were incorporated into later scenes in the episode. “There’s a scene where Picard and Data are talking about how the crew is holding up, and then Picard says a line or two that echoes the play. Then, in the confrontation with the Romulans, there are suggestions of Henry V in Picard’s stance, bravery and decisions, and what the argument is about. If you are a musician, as I am, it is a trick that you throw into arrangements to echo other songs and play on a melody that reminds you of something else. I was very proud of that.”

Michael Piller, Ira Steven Behr, and Ron D Moore built the TNG we love.

Whatever else Shakespeare is good for, he’s always in the public domain.

You know an episode is well-written when two people can sit in a room and talk with nothing else going on and you are glued to the screen.

I love this discussion between Picard and Jarok

His innocence is golden…or is that his skin?

so true!

and it’s so heart-wrenching that Jarok is moved by the desire to build a better world for his children

“Second Officers log…”

Oh WOW! Is that the first time we find that out? That Data is the Second Officer.

“The Treaty of Algeron”?

Flowers for Algernon?

Probably a coincidence.

Or is it?

On researching that, I found that this was originally written to be a love story between Crusher and Jarok. Whoa!!

“No! No! It’s impossible!”

Is Vader his father too?

Jarok’s realization is palpable.

G’Kar!

Actor Andreas Katsulas makes his second of four appearances in TNG as Romulan Commander Tomalak. It also marks Tomalak’s final ‘real’ appearance in Star Trek. Of his next two appearances, the first was part of an illusion, and the second was part of an alternate timeline.

Tomalak is a great character.

And it hurts to watch!

“if the cause is just!” this is awesome

and Klingon music muwahaha

The delivery of Jarok’s letter is described in the Short story “Suicide Note”.

Oh, Jarok…

this is an absolutely fabulous episode! one of my favorites

Difference between Kirk and Picard. Kirk would have been all bravado there, Picard handles it with grace and class. I’m not saying which is better (y’all know where I stand in the debate) I’m just saying.

Two episodes in a row where a guest star became a martyr for a lost cause.

I sense a theme. :frowning:

He is a pioneer for his people but their cultural sense is too overwhelming. Makes the work Spock tries to accomplish later in Unification so worthy.
