Yeah lol. I do find it funny when people complain about JP/// because of the story. C’mon people, it’s not highbrow cinema, it’s dinosaurs eating people and it’s as cool as that water skiing squirrel.

I also forgot to add Spaceballs*, the Twilight Zone**, and the Planet of the Apes series to my list.

*Funniest movie ever and a crap load of one liners. “They’ve gone to plaid!”
**“Mr Chambers, don’t get on that ship! ‘To Serve Man’, it’s, it’s a cookbook!”

I’m gonna have to go with you on that one. I think Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neil are completely what made the movie for me. The animation was great for the time as well.

If you can’t put yourself in the frame of mind to watch giant dinosaurs run around and eat people…you have my pity.

Yes but there is oen thing cooler then dinasours eatting people…are cars that blow up stuff! You just can’t beat that, I must admit

And I don’t care what anyone says, I’ll always have a thing for Pirte s and Orlando bloom hehe

I’ve also always been a huge fan of Firefly, and Doctor who…The doctor could totlay kill Kirk any day hehe.

And you could never go wrong with the great most ufnny show ever Red Dwarf…which really did suck in series seven and 8. lol. And I am a fan of Babylon 5…and torchwood is a good one…

I like spaceballs, but its much funnier in your head, then it acutlay is when you sit down to esee it again (at least thats how it works for me)

I loved the late 'Dwarf! Sure, it’s dramatically different than early 'Dwarf, but they each have their own charm.

I suppose everyone’s already guessed from my avatar that I’m a Firefly fan. At some point when I get a chance, I’ll post the full image. It’s a pretty funny caricature of me, and that gun you see is way, way bigger than Vera.

I think that avatar is brilliant lol. Especially since you posted your real picture. Sean (I’m assuming he did it) hit the nail on the head with that one.

STake that back right now chuck hahaahhaha. I couldn’t stand series seven at alll. I thought it was a complete peice of crap once rimmer left. Series 8 was not as funny, but hey, it had its minutes of greatness. Series four, if you ask me, will always be the best hehe

I am. And yeah, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Then again I give credit to B5 for starting the idea that shows need to have a set story line of fixed length. The similarities get worse; B5 had a hard time getting funding for their final season so they tried to cram a lot of stuff into the 4th season (this one bodes well for the 4th BSG season though). Also on a small note, both BSG and B5 have done a fabulous job of depicting combat in space (ships don’t really need to bank in space and the way that they launch fighters). If you like the elements in BSG I strongly suggest that you try B5 (the first season is hard to get through but it is worth it to tough it out).

As for the other sci fi that I like:
Firefly
Special Unit 2 (Its a lot like the X-Files only less serious and more funny)
Eureka (Great spoof of all sci fi ever)
TNG
Voyager
The Stargates
Jake 2.0
War of the Worlds (more the book than the movie)
Dilbert The Series
Dune
just to name a few

I love Eureka. I mean, c’mon, it’s the X-Files meets Northern Exposure! How could that combination not be awesome?

Special Unit 2 is pretty fun, too. It’s kind of like Torchwould for kids :stuck_out_tongue:

Chuck: which radio show are you talking about? The BBC radio drama adaptation? I just recently downloaded something like that to listen to on vacation. It was good, but seemed to be incredibly rushed. All three books in like four hours.

Hey guys,

Jayhawk35 here…long time listener, but I never do the blog thing. This forum is a bit more my style, although I probably won’t say much here as well, I thought I’d put in my 2 cents worth.

First and foremost, Firefly is my life. Yes, BSG is an incredible show, and I enjoy it, especially seasons 1 and 2, but Firefly is what reignited my passion for sci-fi, which I’d pretty much given up hope for since the end of original Trek and Jedi…and I know you guys are big TNG fans, but I watched, and watched TNG, hoping the fire would rekindle itself from the original series, but it never did. Picard wasn’t about to put his neck on the line to save/protect one of his crew like Kirk was for Bones or Spock (or any of those three for one another), and the chemistry just wasn’t there…

Then, one day, a friend told me I should watch Firefly, and once I did, there was that comradery that I had been looking for in TNG and other Trek and sci-fi shows that had let me down through the years! Here was a gritty show that the main characters actually cared for one another deep down enough that they WOULD risk their lives for one another if needed, even if they wouldn’t admit it out loud!

Ok, enough rambling. I just wanted to say my piece about Firefly and sci-fi in general. Since discovering Firefly a few years ago (right before the release of Serenity), I’ve searched out other good shows and movies that I might have missed along the way. I have to admit that while I used to be a HUGE sci-fi fan, life, kids, and a wife who couldn’t care less for sci-fi got in my way. I’ve missed shows like Stargate, Farscape, and B5 along the way. I never gave Voyager or Enterprise a chance as well, since I’d long given up hope for something well written and edgy. I’ve got the aforementioned shows on my “I need to watch list” and hopefully I’ll somehow find the time someday soon.

Anyway, if you’re still reading this, here’s my list of sci-fi tv shows and movies that I think are cool:

Firefly
BSG
Tripping the Rift
Doctor Who/Torchwood (and the old school Who as well)
Escape from New York
Remo Williams
Lost in Space (the TV show, NOT the movie)
Lost
Max Headroom (the tv series)
The Hitchhiker’s Guide (BBC production not movie)
Futurama
Red Dwarf (huge fan)

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. If you haven’t seen Tripping the Rift, run don’t walk out and buy both seasons. It makes fun of every sci-fi cliche and idea you can think of, and it’s hilarious!

Gotta run, wife is yelling at me…

I’m acutaly jsut starting to get into scifi espechaly this summer…an offical list would be

Red Dwarf
Battlestar Galactica…lol sorry had to add that one
Babylon 5
Firefly (greatest scifi series ever lol…I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry)
Red Dwarf
Transformers
Futeroma
Heroes
Lost
Doctor Who
Torchwood

ITheie would be more but those are the ones I really have gotten into over the past year (I didn’t become a bsg ffan untill the start of season three)

Amber, I’m the same way. Other than Star Wars, I’ve never really been into sci-fi. Since discovering Battlestar Galactica in 2005, though, I’ve started exploring other sci-fi shows and occassional literature and have been very pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, they sell those sets so expensively! Thanks, HBO. If you can find them second-hand or at one of the whole-sale clubs, you’ll do better. I got both Rome sets when they first came out on DVD at Best Buy, which cuts their new releases by at least 30% (got season 2 for $50, instead of the nearly $80 SRP).

It’s a damned good show. I got into it because I’m a sucker for swords and sandals stuff, particularly Roman period, and will check out just about anything (though I’m probably one of the few people in the world who dislikes Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, I did spend 8 bucks to see it because, well, it’s a sprawling Roman epic) in the period at least once. Though it starts off slowly and a bit confusing if you don’t know at least a little bit of the history behind it, it picks up by the third or fourth episode and doesn’t let go (and not only does it stand up to repeated viewings but it actually gets better, since a lot is packed into each early episode and they feel a lot faster the second or third time around). The second season is not as strong as the first, though that’s mostly because of the shorter episode run (10 as opposed to 12 or 13 in season one) and the longer time period to cover, which makes some of the season feel rushed (and there’s one story line that they could’ve cut to make room and not lost anything, but that’s all I’ll say about that).

I’d say it’s worth getting on DVD. The sets themselves are beautifully packaged and have some great extras. The “pop-up” feature that fills in some of the more obscure historical facts are very helpful and insightful (they’re my favorite special feature on those).

All right, commercial’s over.

Hey…I LIKED the movie (better than the book, actually).

I know, I know…sacrilege, right?

Yes … scarilege. lol

Yep, he’s the king.

Well, I can’t argue at all with the complete brilliance of series four. I did enjoy seven, and while as a fan I believe it was fully worth missing Rimmer for the bang of his return, I also completely agree that he’s too important for the show to live without.

So what’s with the 'Dwarf movie? We’ve been hearing rumblings for years, and seem to even remember seeing that some production work had commenced the last time I checked IMDB. But I got tired of waiting and haven’t checked recently. I hope it doesn’t fall aside.

Maybe I should start saving now for a trip to England for the premiere…

I’m talking about the original radio shows, written one at a time, that pre-date the books. They did originally premiere on BBC, so maybe we’re talking about the same thing.

Remo Williams? You rock. I loved that flick, and haven’t seen it in forever. I’d pretty much forgotten about it until I went to post the Amazon link to Buckaroo Banzai and guess what Amazon recommended when I put 'Banzai in my cart? You guessed it: Remo Williams. But the bastards wanted too much for it. I’m gonna look for it used.

And as for Lost In Space, I’m probably one of the two or three people in the world that got a big kick out of the movie. I always got the feeling that most people were expecting something serious like BSG, which the LIS movie was aimed at children. Looking at it from that perspective, it was a lot of fun.

And come on… Rollergirl/Molly Clock in a rubber suit? Damn.

Never apologize! Firefly is awesome, and I’ve met some wonderful people through the Browncoats – a group that I still feel I belong to, even though Joss has moved on.

Galaxy Quest:

by Grabthar’s hammer… by the Sons of Warvan… you shall be… avenged.

on tv, for me, it’s:

BSG
Lost
Heroes
Firefly
Futurama
And of course the 2 new Star Wars shows that will eventually be made

Yes, Remo was great. I have the TV pilot for it as well, which was amusing, but had different actors, and just wasn’t quite the same. As for Remo on DVD, it’s ONLY available in region 1 in FOOLSCREEN, so watch out. I found the Korean version on-line which is widescreen, and is so much better IMHO. Of course, there’s a whole series of Destroyer books the movie was based on, which I started reading 20 years ago after the movie was released, but haven’t touched in years…

For me LiS the movie was a HUGE disappointment. It could have been so cool, and they redesigned the freaking robot to be some weird rolling beast. Granted, I haven’t seen it since the movie came out, so I’ve forgotten, or tried to, most of it. I’ve got all the original LiS toys, including the 24" remote control robot, the Jupiter II, Will, Major West, Doctor Smith, the Carrot man, and the Cyclops actions figures by Trendmasters in the late 1990’s…Those, besides my Hogan’s Heroes Sideshow action figures, are probably my favorite toys in my collection, and all are still in original boxes, NIB, except the 24" robot!

Now, does anybody watch Tripping the Rift?!!?!?!? I love this show!

Mark

I’m not really into sci-fi and never would’ve given a show with a name like Battlestar Galactica a try were it not for a couple friends who love Lost (as I do) and spoke very highly of BSG, even saying that BSG is their new favorite show. I had to see what sort of show this was. of course now it’s one of my favorites too. anyway, besides BSG I like Firefly and Heroes. and wait a minute–is Lost sci-fi?
