I always thought of pirate comic as the B story because it was literally a full full spread out through the series. Last night I found this link http://boredomfestival.wordpress.com/2007/12/11/tales-of-the-black-freighter/#marooned that discusses the role that the pirate story plays in the overall narrative of Watchmen. It was a very interesting read and the person who posted the discussion also has the pirate story sections of each issue presented as its own comic.
Vote for Watchmen people. It’s great, you’ll like it, A LOT!!!
yeah, it’s different to see the pirate story as a whole and not in pieces scattered throughout Watchmen. so far, I’ve read Watchmen only once and I think it’s gonna take me at least another time to fully appreciate the mirroring and paralleling that the pirate story does for the main plot(s). And, as the guy said in the article:
Watchmen has a multilayered plot

so, it really doesn’t make much of a difference which subplot you label as A,B,C respectively.
Edit: I just saw that Watchmen and 1984 are tighed at 19, so maybe we’re gonna have to read both?
Ooh, 19 votes for 1984 and 19 for Watchmen as of 12:47 est today! How exciting.
Are Chuck, Audra, and Sean our superdelegates?
I don’t wanna be a superdelegate! They have to wear stupid stripey hats! I don’t wanna wear a stripey hat!

(A special, feline tribute to that particular scene of Hamlet)
I’m already dusting off my copy of 1984…
I see Orwell has the momentum this morning…
1984 was one of those books that I read as a teen - didn’t get it–read it when I was 21, got it and thought “man that is some good sci fi” - read it again about three or four years ago and thought “oh…sh*t”
other Star Wars (post RotJ) are good - books from the Yuuzan Vong War and the current Legacy of the Force series is good as well.
Dear Audra,
It is the funniest thing that you sent me this video. My nephew who for some reason has a very intense love of cats showed me that video some time ago. I find it becomes really fulfilling when the cats start fighting. Oh and as a sidenote, you did vote for Watchmen right.....?
What about the book of the month for April?
Last I heard, there was a motion to pick “2001” indepedent of a poll in honor of the late Arthur C. Clarke. I believe there was a second – did it die in committee?
I saw the motion, but I never heard any “official” word on that.
The motion has been approved! (But I’ve just been totally up to my ears in getting set up for the live 'cast.) I’ll post it today.
After reading a lot of books on Japanese history I decided to take a break and go back to reading some good SF books. I checked the voting this month, and I picked up ‘Old Man’s War’ at Borders today. I am sure it won’t disappoint.
Nope. Be sure to check out “Ghost Brigades” after it.
Wow that book was great!! I have already reserved a copy of Ghost Brigades at Borders for pick up tomorrow.
Now I know that Chuck has a lot to do and I would hate to be an additional stress factor, but I just love the monthly book club and was just wondering how we were going to choose a book for May - or was that going to be “Watchmen” by default and I just missed the memo?
I am pleased to report I am 1/4 of the way through Dune!
Surely you must be joking?
