Losing my Firefly virginity

Well, there is one more pretty entertaining bit of “Firefly” you may not have seen yet…

It’s about twice as long as the gag reel on the DVD, full of all the swearing and copyrighted music that they couldn’t put on a commercial release. Well worth your time.

That was worth a viewing. Sort of more of the same, but i’m glad for the more.

You know what blows my mind? I just found out that Nathan Fillion is only two years older than me. I totally thought he was older after seeing him play Malcolm Reynolds. Weird!

As to missing the laughter: yeah, I don’t want to rewatch these TOO often for fear of losing that (I’ve retired my three Arrested Development sets for a while for the same reason. The jokes were TOO familiar, you know?).

He’s a year younger than me. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad…then again I guess it’s good because I thoguht he was younger than that from his One Life to Live days.

Me too. Me too.

deathbytray, love the photo

That was totally worth watching! And because I am the only FT staff member who is still here on Halloween afternoon, I am using that inspiration to watch “Safe” on Hulu.

We watched Serenity tonight. As I’ve mentioned, I’d seen the film before and liked it fine. Didn’t think it was great, but thought it was an enjoyable piece of science fiction, with well drawn characters and a compelling plot. Made me think that, perhaps, I should check this “Firefly” thing out.

After having watched the entire series in order I have to say that, within that context, it is a gorgeous, moving, tragic, sad, funny, beautiful end to the Serenity crew’s arc. There are still many unanswered questions, to be sure, but I love how the film answers a great deal of them, particularly as to how this 'verse works, where they came from, and so on. My biggest complaint is that Shepherd is reduced to a cameo
and he, and Wash, die
. Although I have to admit that the latter move is a corageous bit of writing from Joss Whedon and shows commitment to not keeping ANYONE safe as the story takes its darkest turn towards denoument.

I have to tip my hat to Whedon as a writer as far as this film is concerned. Obviously, Serenity is a labor of love for the show’s fans, but he manages to do a fantastic job of presenting a story that is satisfying within the context of the larger story in the context of the (sadly abortive) television series AND to casual moviegoers not intimately familiar with this world. Very, very few writers are ever succesful at pulling a transition like that off and I think Whedon succeeds with flying colors, in my experience.

So, now that I’m done with this journey (since I assume there is no chance in hell that the series will ever be resurrected or that there’ll be a sequel to Serenity), I have to say (or re-iterate, really) that Lucky was right: if I wasn’t going to be a fan of the show by “Jaynestown” I wasn’t ever going to be. Well, I’ve become a fan of the show. I’d even call myself a Browncoat, I suppose, though I haven’t immersed myself in that community like I have with BSG–yet (it may have to wait till my schedule eases and my life stops being so complicated. Perhaps when–IF–I retire). Regardless of the label, I have fallen in love with this 'verse and these characters. How I wish there were more stories to be told! I am glad, however, that there can at least be a small sense of completion to the arc. I look forward to re-experiencing this story very, very soon.

“The way I figure, the albatross brought the ship good luck till some idiot shot it. That’s right, I read a poem. Try not to think.”

Thank you Armando for the journey. I loved reading the posts. Right now, I can’t get enough of Firefly. Shiny.

I have been offline for a while Armando, but I am glad to hear you enjoyed the box set I sent you! The comics are decent, but between the two, I definitely liked “Better Days” the most. If you are interested, but don’t want to order them from ebay or amazon, here is the site I use, and I highly recommend it: http://www.tfaw.com/. They sometimes have some great deals; I think I saw Watchmen on there for something like 8 dollars.

Thanks, Lucky. And yes, I did enjoy them. I’m not ready to continue the evangelizing just yet as my wife is not through the entire set yet and I’d like another crack at them (I will eventually buy my own set now). I’m trying to convince my best friend to take a look at the show as well. He’s a big sci fi geek (we met at a music festival but bonded over a shared love of Star Wars) and I got him into BSG, so I’m selling him on Firefly, which he’s been meaning to get into, he says. Can’t stop the signal!

And thank you for setting me off on this journey. It ended up becoming quite beautiful (the series as a journey, that is). I can’t believe I missed this show the first time around!

If you (or anyone else) feel like returning the favor, though, start tuning in to Pushing Daisies on ABC on Wed. at 8:00. It’s a fabulous, whimsical, funny show by the creator of “Wonderfalls” and “Dead Like Me” which is floundering under poor ratings (though it’s critically acclaimed, just like Firefly and Arrested Development!) and deserves a wider audience. PLEASE!!!

Pushing Daisies is one of my favorite shows (like DLM and AD and Firefly before it) which probably means it’s doomed. :frowning: Like anything thought provoking, it sometimes seems.

I adore the actors, esp Ned, who was also wonderful in the movie The Fall.

I latched on to Dead Like Me with no resistance, particularly attuned to the snarkiness of the dialogue, and an especially warm, albeit tough-love-paternal performance by Mandy Patinkin. I haven’t seen Daises yet, as I tend to avoid network television like the creeping crud (much like Sean in that respect), but if it comes with enough praise and laud, I may suck it up and queue the DVDs.

One of the most important contribution of the show Dead Like Me: introducing Metisse’s Boom Boom Ba to the world.

I had picked up on Metisse through some downtempo DJs, but the duo was pretty quickly pushed out of the limelight (in that circle, anyway) by the heavy orchestration of Portishead, and the deep soul of Zero7…still catchy stuff, nonetheless.

Big props to Six Feet Under for always having a finger on the pulse of some great soundtrack material, as well…the Devlins, Sia, and the GODDESS, Imogen Heap…

We loved Dead Like Me. Haven’t seen Daisies though. Maybe I should try it since I think I’ve given up on Fringe.

Pushing Daisies is a really good show. my wife sent it to me to watch during Season 1. It’s very smart and draws you in fast. plus I love pie.

I’m into Chi MacBride myself. Every time he says “oh HELL NO!” I just lose it. But then, the casting is so pitch perfect on that show, it’s hard to think of anyone I don’t like. I even like Christen Chenowith, and I normally don’t care for her work.

We loved Dead Like Me. Haven’t seen Daisies though. Maybe I should try it since I think I’ve given up on Fringe.

Daisies needs our love or it will go the way of Firefly. I’ll settle for enough love to let it go like Arrested Development: sure, canceled before its time, but it had a satisfying resolution and a decent, if abbreviated, run.

LOL!! Yup…he’s fantastic. “Shut your piehole!” heehee. He’s the perfect curmudgeon. My fav’s are the Aunts.
I want to live in their version of the world, eat pie and solve crime! Though I’d be wearing sunglasses a lot.

Wow–spent the holiday weekend watching the season’s episodes and then watched “Serenity” last night. I am not sure how I missed this show. Perhaps it was due to Fox’s mismanagement of sci shows; keeping the X-Files for 3 seasons too long and not giving other shows much of a chance to build an audience.

I can’t really pick a favorite episode, rather I’d rather say that I find none of them to really be duds. I did really like Objects in Space, especially seeing Richard Brooks a bit different form his Law and Order days. The first time River’s voice is heard during the search gave me chills!

Now I need to get the DVD’s. Or maybe I need to get a blue ray instead of my upconverting unit.

Richard Brooks was fantastic against type in “Objects in Space,” wasn’t he?
