WHOOAH!
Damn, I’m old…
Shut up. Off the lawn.
I loved this scene. I wasn’t freaked out about it in the least. I think it’s wonderful to see two mature characters in a sexual relationship. It’s a terrific counterpoint to all the “what the frak, let’s frak” pant and shirt tugging, lip bruising humping that goes on with the younger characters. THAT is porn. Oh, don’t get me wrong. It’s lovely porn. Most enjoyable porn. Wish I could see some hot dude’s bum porn. But porn.
These two characters have much more to lose in this relationship. They are so raw here it almost hurts. They have fallen in together against the odds and against what is “right” given their respective positions of responsibility. It’s not logical, but it is human and beautiful – and real. If this relationship doesn’t work out, you won’t see either of them hopping into bed with someone else. You see two older people lying in bed finding some joy together. One is dying and has given up her responsibility and the other, after trying to prop her up, solve her problems, is also throwing aside his responsibilities to be with her for that moment. This is what she wants, and this is what he has given her. And in throwing aside the crushing responsibilities that are almost overwhelming him and may even be killing him, he has found a moment of joy.
Who knows what will happen tomorrow. Will he jump out of bed, brush his teeth, take his medication, put on his uniform and pretend to be the rock he thinks the Fleet needs? Will she turn her head to the wall and continue waiting for death? To me this scene wasn’t about porn, or even sex. It was about love and a desperate need to forget the horrors and find happiness, if only for the moment.
I thought it was beautiful.
