In need of constructive help with 3D model

Thanks for the encouragement Sean. The scout class stealth is about the same length as a tie bomber. I am rethinking the pregnant ship idea and going back to the MkI version. I need some ideas (shape, size, configuration) for a carrier ship to hold a few scouts and a few fighter/bombers.

Now my overall goal is going to create a GWC short animation with a stroyline that has an AI awakening plot. I am going to need help with a screenplay, character creation & animation, and voicework. I hope to get a basic animatic done in this year once I have untextured models.

i love this one…

i love my spaceships in two very distinct ways.

  1. reminds me of marine animals or flight animals. eg. your scout craft/shadow ships and Whitestar from B5.

or

  1. very scientific and functional in mind. eg. starfury and omega class destroyer of EA from B5, or Defiant from DS9

if you ever played Freespace2, there are some wonderful ships.

but yeah, i love your scoutship. the sleek version of your first ship would be ossim if it is a drone. Especially from the side view. If only the front view can be a little less wide, it would look really nice from all directions.

Just spitballing here but, hmm, I would make it the same style (so kin to the angular Y-wing style like you had it if I recall) which to me would mean visable doors (perhaps even an angular pod config?) and since it’s launching fighters the doors would either face out to the sides or the hanger would be slung under the belly so the fighters would not interfere with the carriers maneuvers . Typically a carrier would hold enough of a threat to protect the carrier itself and do forward operations I would think, so a squadran or 24 or so fighters - maybe more - might be aboard so the carrier would be big. Enough gear and crew to feep the fighters in service. Your talking Star-Destoyer length would be my guess but depending on your vision perhaps not the gerth. Unless its a heavy carrier/cruiser attack squad then it could be smaller but not by much.

Wow, awesome!

If you go for a carrier, however you decide to design it, put the launch/recovery bays in some sort of sensible location that can be covered and allows the fighters to be launched without endangering the ship. Especially important if you feel like the ship has shields that have to be raised and lowered for the fighters to launch.

I did read a book once where a modified Corellian Corvette (Leia’s ship from the first scene in Star Wars: A New Hope (the Tantive IV) was able to launch a squadron of X-Wings (minus 2) and two Tie Interceptors. There was an expanded cargo bay in the bow section (they’d cut the captains quarters and moved them aft) along with a complicated storage system to allow the X-Wings to launch. Of course, Expanded Universe allows all sort of things to happen.

I really approve of the Galactica’s launch/recovery system over either Star Destoryers or Mon Cal Cruisers

Here is the beginning of the light cruiser for this adventure. It is 380 meters long and 115 meters wide. I will still have to add in the two other types of ships. My thinking for this is a smaller mothership type of craft that supports two fighter bombers and two stealth scouts. I think this will work best for the animation so that it is not too confusing to start.

I know this ship needs something besides defense weapons, propulsion and more detail. I just need some ideas to jazz up the base model as it were. Any ideas would be helpful.

Updated light carrier

Any comments would be appreciated.

I’m assuming the cluster that moved from amidships to nearer the stern is the bridge, and if I’m right, I like the bridge closer to the rear, from an aesthetic point of view. Of course, as I’ve thought about it, with space ships, there is really no good reason the bridge should be anywhere as exposed as we like for them to be.

I do also like the ‘sharper’ edges of this second model over the first one.

thank you Fallen_Crusader:)

I too like the second better than the first. More anglular is sweet. The tower at the rear is uber cool.

thanks for the encouragement. I hope to have some time this weekend to fix-up the fighter/bomber. since yesterday was kind of a watch kids/work from home later day that does not happen often. Back to the office where i can’t be modeling during work hours but maybe over lunch, taking away all my creative fun but with today’s economy, oh well I can manage.

More like dark carrier. AMIRITE?!

What if you swept the nose down a bit, made it more of a pod shape, and put the flightlines on the outside like an aircraft carrier?

Mom says that summer I spent as a shipwright’s assistant in the Pegasi Delta system was a waste of my youth, but I disagree. I mean hey, being in cryosleep on the way there and back I didn’t really lose that much time.

Or you could look to the Spaceballs Mega Maid for inspiration:

Updated model, fixing the model from autocad created elements to blender meshes. updated the engines and ion type cannons. still have fix the gatling guns. should i stick with them or try something else?

I fixed the gatlings to be in blender. Will add details at a later date. I just need to add simple weapons to scout ship and tighten up the carrier and hopefully soon I can post a short animatic.

thoughts on the smoothed out carrier to go with the scout ship?

Thought I would add in a little Iron Man coloring for Chuck

I have provided the link to the test flight of Frak Forward versus a Carrier. Still needs a lot of work but I hope a good first try. Let me know what you think.

Just some quick tactical points. Make the weapon mounts turrets instead of fixed. Space combat is 3 dimension locking guns to one makes you an easy target. Keep everything a dark color, makes them harder to spot visually. Shrink the preggers ship and make it a EMC counterpart to your fighter/scout.

Dark colors also absorb solar radiation better, and in space the biggest issue is shedding heat. Plus, being hard to see makes for a crap model

I like the way these have come along.

OK, here are my two cents-

Shed the two side mounted weapons and replace them with an upper and lower mounted turret instead. They can serve as auto-targeting (or the ship can have a gunner) offensive weapons, and as defensive weapons as well. Plus it will allow the pilot better freedom of movement because it will keep him from having to make very predictable strafing runs.

If this is going to be the only fighter ever seen, a large carrier may be overkill as its base of operations. Maybe it can detach from a much smaller class of ship, instead of emerging from a bay which seems a little wasteful in terms of space.

And if the ship is going to engage capitol ships I would suggest removing a pair of the forward mounted guns and installing launch tubes instead. Unless you would rather have the missiles mounted underneath the hull, but that would involve a lot more work I would imagine.

As far as the ECM goes, most smaller craft utilize pods, which can be shed once the power cells and/or ordnance has been used up. And larger ones also use decoy drones.

I am assuming based upon the ships shape it is strictly a non-atmospheric vessel. In that case you can put lots of ‘hard-points’ on its hull, it would make it look as though lots of modular units can be placed on it based upon what type of mission it is going on. And therefore much more multi purpose.

Hmmmmmmmm… I guess in that case it would need a carrier after all. The carrier would supply the fuel and ordnance, and then a ‘host’ ship could ferry the fighter/fighters to a launch point. Thereby vastly extending the fighters range and keeping the pilots fresh for their mission.

Oh well, enough babbling. Nice work, keep it up.
