Human female survivors: Who is left to carry on Humanity?

I would imagine that once the fleet finds some place to settle down and disembark for the last time from their ships society is going to fall back to a much more basic level. There are not going to be any of the social safety nets that advanced societies bring. In many societies the only way someone is ensured that they will be cared for in their older age is by having children. Thus, there will be many incentives for all people gay or straight to have children who previously showed little interest in it before.

Talk to the cylons. Since we’re all one big happy fleet, they’d be happy to start growing humans.

I haven’t read this whole thread yet, so I’m not sure if this has been brought up. Since the Fleet’s survival IS going to depend on the tech of the Cylons, why not in the reproductive arena? They already started something on the Farm and I can only guess that they should be able to grow full humans. I don’t think they are going to go in that direction with only 11 or so episodes left. Yet who knows? At the breakneck speed the episodes have been moving, they might.

Traditionally, you would go into religion and become a priestess. Some religions allowed their members to have children, others expected celebacy, or at least no families. The people tend to be a lot more tolerant of a person following religious orders and give them a pass on many of the normal societal expectations.

The big question would be, what is expected in the Colonial’s religion? We’ve seen several priests and priestesses, and they all looked single, but they might have had families that were left behind.

You could always create a splinter sect…

Also, some special jobs other than religion might have the “No Kids” dispensation, but I can’t think of an example at the moment.

I like that idea. A lot. Use the cylon tech to avoid turning women into baby factories (kids are great, I want to have kids some day, but forcing that on people, never OK).

I am with you. I remember this movie on showtime when I was in High school called The Handmaiden or something like that. That was the plot… only some women could reproduce … so they were captured and turned into reproduction nuns. I had just gotten together with my first “real” girlfriend and all I could think about was how bad that would suck for the “woman I love”. I know that’s A little dramatic for an all american football playing 16 year old, but I took that movie really seriously and really wasn’t able to enjoy it based on the premise. I feel the same way about this situation with the fleet. I am for ANYTHING they can come up with short of forced reproduction.

I have a vision of the fleet ( at current time) at best being like the Nazi’s and haveing the marketing ploy of promoteing reproduction and outlawed abortion with propaganda… and at worse case… the handmaiden movie.

The Handmaid’s Tale. I haven’t seen the movie, but the book is awesome. Scary but awesome.

I saw that movie back when it came out. Even now when I think of it, I get a little sick in the stomach. I didn’t read the book, but if the film is even close regarding the plot, I don’t know if reading it would have been better than watching the movie. When I started reading this thread, this is the first thing that came to my mind too. The whole idea is incredibly disturbing to me, and I would hate to think these characters could ever get to this point.

To all those in the fleet who simply don’t want to have children, Tigh has this to say, “Do your Frakking job!”

wow! I am the most unlikely candidate for women’s rights I gues… but I have to say hellz to the no. That is paracticaly a horror movie to me.

Of course puligamy was started amongst the early mormon for basicly the same need ( they claimed) . ( irony , given the origin’s of BSG TOS) .A need ( their oppinion) to reproduce in mass in order to have their own society. ( or to be perverts and breed subserviant women;if you ask the federal government and every women’s group in existance) And we all have seen in the news how that worked out in the long run for women’s rights. ( given even though it’s abolished officially it’s history still lives on in the “truebelivers”)

Given that in the 21st Centuray we have an example of how this avtivity leaves it’s dirty hands on our land entering the 2nd century of it’s existance… it’s obviously a bad idea at all.

Better to go extinct than to ever become that. I mean another example would be… if we had to all beacome Reavers ( Firefly - as if you didn’t know what I meant) for humanity to exist… should we? I say no.

Women in “service” doing their “jobs” is something intollerable, even in jest. If the fleet must become that… better them die slowly with honor… than florish at the price of their true humanity.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Very creepy scary. The movie has Aiden Quinn eye candy.

I think it’s important to note that our stance on children is very much based on the society we live in. A world of convenience is easy for those of us who want no or very few children (one and done for me, tyvm). A world were hard work and effort is needed (and it looks like that will be the case if they can find a frakking planet to live on) will simply necessitate larger families to share the workload. I don’t think a child-bearing law would be needed; I would think that the remnants of the 12 Colonies would realize that they NEED kids far more than they WANT them.

What if Head Baltar and Head Six got it on? :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it looks cute.

Nope. Head doesn’t lead to children.

cue the rim shot!

Wow, that reminds me of that drug trip I saw in that movie while I was on that drug trip.

I was being serious. I loved that haircut on her. But honestly I love everything aboout Selix. I think that she is probably one of the most beutiful women I ever saw. Twice as pretty in person.
