GWC Re-watch: Serenity, Pt. 1 & 2 (Pilot)

I may be a bit late getting started with this rewatch, but it has only been about 3 months since I’ve seen Serenity/Firefly last.

Boy oh boy, have I missed Wash. I love his dinosaur introduction. Also he’s a great mime, just after he completes the Crazy Ivan maneuver, it cuts back to a shot of Mal, Zoe and Wash, with Wash holding the steering wheel… only he’s not actually holding the steering wheel, he’s holding nothing but air because the chair he’s sitting in has been pushed back to a larger part of the bridge.

We may love to hate Badger, but in the verse, he is correct, he is in a higher economic class than the crew of Firefly. While our big damn heroes are hauling souped up power bars and salivating over Book’s fresh fruit he brought on board, Badger has enough money that he’s able to use that super cool apple peeler, so he can eat the apple and he can afford to NOT eat the skin if he doesn’t want to.

It was fun watching how they set up Reavers starting from when the crew lands on Persephone, anything that makes Jayne scared is DEFINITELY something to fear and then, when we hear Zoe’s description of what the Reavers would do to them, it’s easy to understand what makes them so scary.

My Firefly DVDs arrived today. I’m so excited! I’m gonna watch the pilot today or tomorrow and I don’t know what y’all will be doing until the premiere of season 4, but I’m gonna watch Firefly for the first time

Great pilot!

Why did Jayne even think about betraying Mal? Was there something in their backstory that I missed and why does Mal keep him around if he knows that Jayne is dangerous to him?

GR, it is a great question. Think of Mal as a pragmatist…at this point in the series you know that Jayne is a hired gun…if Mal hired him there must be an attribute that Mal needs that Jayne has. In Jayne’s line of work it is probably hard to find honorable men, Jayne is a necessary evil on this crew. Mal knows this and believes he can manage it.

Just rewatched this with my twelve year old son last week and he’s hooked. I always spot something new. We’re in the habit of using subtitles and as a writer the dialogue language is incredible to hear and see. Amazing how shifting just one word in a sentence can make you feel how different of a 'verse they’re in than ours.
